Mathew Kanyamunyu
City Businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for the alleged murder of social worker Kenneth Akena.
Kanyamunyu was handed the sentence on his own guilty plea, following a plea deal with the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
He was convicted of manslaughter.
While Kanyamunyu, together with his co-accused girlfriend Cythia Munwangari had initially denied shooting to death in a parking altercation back in 2016, the former recently decided to rescind the plea.
This followed a meeting he had with clan leaders of the later Akena in which he admitted to the murder and asked to be forgiven.
Early this week, Kanyamunyu had asked High Court judge Steven Mubiru to stay his trial until he concludes Mato Oput, a traditional justice system (in Acholi) and plea bargaining with the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
The judge however, declined this request.
This is a developing story.
