A Senior 3 student at St. Barnabas Karujanga SS in Katuna Town Council, Kabale district has been shot and injured during a students’ fight that went out of control.
Bright Muhumuza was reportedly hit by a stray bullet when police went to respond to the riot on Thursday.
The riot was sparked by a misunderstanding between two students; one Anselm who accused a colleague named Jim of stealing food and other personal belongings from his case.
Other students reportedly ganged up on Jim and beat him up.
However, a students’ disciplinary committee later investigated and determined that Jim had been wrongfully accused.
The body as such decided to hand out punishments to all those who participated in beating Jim.
A scuffle erupted and the chairman of the student’s disciplinary committee, one Asuman Benon was badly injured.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson says the school administration tried to calm the students in vein and decided to call the police.
As the Police from Kabale responded with teargas and live bullets, one stray bullet struck Muhumuza in the shoulder.
Maate says both injured students (Asuman and Muhumuza) were rushed to Rushoroza hospital where the latter was referred to Mbarara Regional Hospital and is currently in a stable condition.
