The police in Kanungu District are searching for a man accused of beheading his own father following a dispute over land.
The suspect, identified as Erias Nahabwe, is said to have killed his 75-year-old father, Bagambana Nyansio, a resident of Kanjara Cell, Southern Ward in Kanungu Town Council.
According to reports, the tragic incident happened on February 4, 2025. That morning, Bagambana, who was feeling unwell, asked his son for money to seek treatment at Katate Health Center IV. When Nahabwe refused, his father became frustrated and demanded land documents so he could sell part of his property to raise money for medical care. The son again denied his request.
At around 11:30 AM, the elderly man went to the health center alone, while his wife headed to a nearby bar. Later in the evening, when she returned home around 7:00 PM, she found her husband lying dead on his bed, his head chopped off. A blood-stained panga was abandoned beside his body.
The area chairperson, Twesigye Koronerio, reported the matter to the police, who quickly arrived at the scene. A police dog (K-9) followed a trail leading to Nahabwe’s home, but the suspect had already fled. Authorities also noted that the family’s herdsman had gone missing under unclear circumstances.
Bagambana’s body was taken to Katate Health Center IV for a postmortem examination as police continue their hunt for the key suspects.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the ongoing investigation and urged the public to assist in locating Nahabwe.
“We are doing everything possible to bring the suspect to justice,” he said.
