A 12-year-old boy and a diver have drowned in a stream in Kijabijjo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso district, raising fears about the safety of children during this long holiday season.
“The first incident happened on 23/11/2022 when Ssentezza Joel, 12, had gone swimming with other children but unfortunately, he drowned,” said Deputy spokesperson, Kampala Metropolitan ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.
He said the children that survived rushed and informed their parents who mobilized efforts to find the body of the deceased but they could not find it on the first day.
On Thursday, as the search intensified, Charles Kasaga Kiwanuka, 40, who had entered the same stream to help find the drowned child also drowned in the process.
Owoyesigyire said a team of police officers from both Kasangati Police station and Kijabijjo responded to the crime scene.
“A search was mounted by volunteers to find the bodies of the deceased persons and the first victim was found,” he observed.
“Police divers were called to help search for the body of the second victim yesterday but in vain. The search for the body is still ongoing.”
Peter Musoke, a resident of Kijabijjo, said they received the news of the drowning with shock.
“Parents need to keep an eye on the kids during this holiday,” said Musoke.
“The entire village is in shock,” he added.
Kids are on holiday till early February 2023.
Police advised “all parents to be vigilant as their children are now back from school, playing and swimming in unsafe and unsupervised places should be prohibited and children warned against it.”
