Makerere University will on Thursday, June 23, 2022 launch of the inaugural memorial lecture in honour of its first Vice Chancellor, Frank Kalimuzo, the University has announced.
The Memorial Lecture is part of Makerere’s activities to commemorate 100 years of Excellent Service to Humanity.
The Inaugural Frank Kalimuzo Memorial Lecture is the fourth of a series of [email protected] Public Lectures.
The memorial lecture will be held under the theme, “Remembering Frank Kalimuzo: Lessons for Universities in Cultivating a Culture of Service and Distinguished Leadership.”
For its first journey of 60years, Makerere University was predominantly under the leadership and management of the Colonial masters. Even when Makerere University was under the East African University arrangement, with the University of Nairobi and the University of Dar-es-Salam as constituent colleges, it was still under the superior control of the University of London.
This White dominance soon started to give way in 1964, with the appointment of the former President of Uganda, Prof. Yusuf Kironde Lule, who became the first black Principal of then Makerere University College.
“The appointment of Prof. Lule, paved the way for Ugandan academics like Mr. Frank Kalimuzo in 1970 when he was appointed by the then President, Dr. Apollo Milton Obote to become the first Vice-Chancellor of the newly formed Makerere University away from the colonial and white man control,” the University said.”
“In his brief tenure as the first Vice-Chancellor, courses like Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Forestry, Bachelor of Lows and Bachelor of Technology, were added to the University’s Curriculum. Veterinary Medicine, which was being offered at Nairobi University, was also introduced at Makerere University while Music, Dance and Drama became diploma subjects,” it added.
The Main Library and Albert Cook Medical Library were extended in 1972. Later that year, during former President Idi Amin’s rule, Mr. Kalimuzo was picked up by security personnel and was never seen alive again.
The University said the late Kalimuzo’s “remarkable devotion” to work and patriotism remained engraved in the core ethos of the University’s leadership over years thus a public lecture in honour of those that share the former Vice-Chancellor’s traits is in order.
The Keynote Speaker for the inaugural Frank Kalimuzo Memorial Lecture will be the Vice Chancellor, Kabale University, Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga, and the wife to the late Mr. Frank Kallimuzo, Mrs. Esther Kalimuzo will be the Guest of Honour.
