KAMPALA– The Makerere University Council has resolved to ban physical guild elections and that any future elections shall be virtual.
The Position was reached upon during the emergency meeting held on 15th July 2022 as the University Council deliberated on the violence that characterised the 88th students guild leadership electoral process.
Among other things, the council has also resolved to terminate the electoral process of the 88th Students’ guild leadership, to appoint a select committee to review the Students guild operations to conduct a complete report of the Makerere University Students’ Guild constitution.
The committee is to compromise of Assoc. Professor Hellen Nambalirwa as Chairperson, Rt. Hon. Daniel Fred Kidega, Eng. Dr. S.P Kagoda, Assoc. Prof. Sarah Ssali, Bruce Balaba and John Cris Ninsiima as members.
This committee according to communique from the meeting that was chaired by the University Council Chairperson Lorna Magara, shall provide an interim report to the University council within one month from the day of appointment.
The Council also reassured the public of the University’s commitment to enforcing discipline and gauranteeing the security of Students, staff and other University stakeholders.
The development comes just hours after Batungura Bewotti 27, a student of law at Uganda Christian University Kampala Campus and resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish Kawempe Division in Kampala was murdered.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, the incident took place on Thursday 14th July 2022 at around 7pm, during the last guild Presidential open campaigns at rugby grounds Makerere University.
It is alleged that during the campaigns a scuffle ensued between two Political party supporters that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by Hon. Kabuye Frank among others.
