Makerere University year one students will start their lectures on March 1, 2021, the management has announced.
The University announced that other students in years; 2,3,4,5 from the College of Health, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Biosecurity, the Architecture Program and 4th Year Agriculture will join them later.
Dr. Umar Kakumba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academic Affairs made this pronouncement in a statement about the phased student reporting program released today, Thursday February 18, 2021.
“Freshers (Year One, Undergraduate and Graduate) orientation, enrollment and registration will be held between Monday 22nd and Saturday 27th February 2021 at their respective colleges and thereafter, teaching and learning for academic year 2020/2021 will commence on Monday March 1, 2021 (for 4 weeks on Campus) until 27th March 2021. Online (ODeL) teaching will follow for this group to completion,” Kakumba said in the statement.
He noted that students who are in their second year and other non finalist students (who should have already started with online teaching from February 8, 2021) will report on campus for laboratory and practicums from March 28 and April 24.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the University Vice Chancellor, last week announced the official reopening date of February 8, following the presidential address where President Museveni gave a directive for staggered reopening of higher institutions of learning, including universities.
The University currently has over 35000 students whom Dr. Umar said will all attend their lectures and later on sit for their examinations.
He noted that other finalists (who should have already started with online teaching from February 8, 2021) will report on campus for laboratory and practicums from April 25 to May 22, which constitutes to four weeks.
“The end of semester one examinations will follow in a staggered manner; a detailed program will be drawn in due course by the Academic Registrar/College Registrar,” he added.
He also directed each College Registrar, in consultation with the Principal, to produce a detailed plan to conduct “Fresher Orientation and Registration Session on Campus from 22nd to 27th February 2021.”
