RUKUNGIRI– The 20th North Kigezi diocesan synod sitting at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano on Monday elected Abel Matita as the head of laity replacing Canon Sabiti Mahirana who served in this same position since 1994.
The caretaker Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwaire commended the outgoing head of laity for the development he has promoted in the diocese.
“Serving for 28 years in the same position is not a simple task and it shows that the public had confidence in you. We thank you that you decided to step aside for young people to take up the mantle,” bishop said.
He added that the development of the diocese and the election of a new bishop lies in the hands of the committees elected today during the 20th diocesan synod.
“After the death of our beloved bishop Benon Magezi most files especially for construction got lost, you will begin from nothing to do most of the diocesan project.
Rev. Canon Polycarp Katwesigye was elected head of laity replacing Rev. Can. Nathan Kirebete who retired and was appointed bishops’ commissary.
Rev. Canon Jack Kabahikyeho who has been Bishops’ commissary for 17 years has also retired officially.
The synod also elected a committee of 15 members who will be responsible for nominating two people and send them to the house of bishop to consider who will be the 6th bishop of North Kigezi diocese. The 5th North Kigezi bishop Benon Magezi died a year ago before his term in office expired.
North Kigezi diocese was curved out of Kigezi diocese Kabale in 1981, and Late Bishop Yostus Ruhindi was the first bishop, followed by Late Bishop Johnwilson Kahigwa as second bishop, Bishop Edward Muhima became 3rd Bishop while Rev. Patrick Tugume Tusingwaire and late Benon Magezi became 4th and 5th diocesan bishops respectively.
The nomination committee will be headed by the diocesan chancellor, Benon Maguru other members of the committee are Rev. Polycarp Katwesigye, Winnie Babihuga, Jolly Mashaija, Canon Jolly Babirukamu, Can. Boaz Mategyero, Muhwezi Mugisha, Benon Kwikiriza, Lea Ankunda, Joab Tumwikirize and Edson Matsiko. Others are Rev Dickens Baguma, Rev. Benson Akankwatsa, Rev. Jolly Tumwesigye and Rev. Eric Bingana Mugyenzi.

Abel Matita polled 47 defeating his closet contender Canon Benon Kwikiriza Baabo who got 45 votes.
