FORTPORTAL– The Ministry of Water and Environment on Friday Planted over 400 natural trees in Fort Portal Tourism City in commemoration of the International Earth Day.
The event organised by AFRIYEA in partnership with the Ministry of water and Environment, Tooro Botanical Gardens, Change Society Needs, Join for Water, Toro Club and many other environmental based organisations took place at Toro club- Fort Portal.
The International Earth Day is globally recognized as the largest secular observance marked by more than a billion people annually as a day of action to change human behavior and create Global, National and Local policy changes.
The participants, who gathered in Fort Portal City for this cause planted 400 trees as part of phase one for this Campaign and they promise to plant much more in times to come.
Students of AFRIYEA Golf Academy embraced tree planting
Richard Muhumuza the Fort Portal Central Division Mayor who officiated at the function noted that he was much pleased seeing a young generation taking lead in Environmental conservation thus promising that his division is very much willing to support such activities.
Muhumuza called upon the organizers to schedule an appointment to ensure that the earth day of 2023 is given more attention. He further highlighted on how the division is working hard to remove people whose activities are endangering the sustainability of river Mpanga. 
Alayo Joanita, Communications Officer from the Ministry of water and Environment under the Albertine water and Management zone said that the practice of celebrating earth day should be made to happen annually so that several Communities can be given light on the benefits of Environmental conservation and protection.
Alayo added that the protection and preservation of our Water and Environment resources is key to preserving livelihoods as well as survival of future generations stressing that her Ministry is committed to preserving these resources.
 “We have a catchment management plan in place for Mpanga Catchment aimed at restoring and protecting river Mpanga and areas benefiting from it” Alayo said.
She also encouraged the public to adopt a culture of re-afforestation, wetland protection, proper garbage disposal, proper farming methods and proper sanitation practices in a bid to protect and conserve the Environment.

Said Islam Musa from Toro botanical was much pleased being part of the  young generation working hard to protect and conserve the environment which corresponds to their Vision and mission.
“For us we are happy to support such initiatives because they all align with our vision and mission” Musa noted.
Isaiah Mwesige from AFRIYEA stretched his voice to different individuals, Organisations and government to always make necessary efforts to protect the environment and further called for action.
“If there is a war we need to fight collectively, its the war against environmental degredation. I call upon all the governments World Wide to take action because the fight against climate change for everyone and if the government can’t invest or support various environmental Campaigns, the citizens should act against such governments” said Mwesige.
