The Chairperson of the Patrice Lumumba Foundation, Prof. Roland Lumumba, has challenged Makerere University students to support Pan-Africanism so as to be true agents of change in their respective communities. Prof. Lumumba argues that, if all students embrace Pan-Africanism, it would be easier for African Countries to achieve fundamental change in all spheres of life. He made the remarks while addressing students and a delegation of Afro-Arab youth councils, who had convened at Makerere University, Kampala.
Prof. Roland Lumumba argues, that in order to achieve Pan-Africanism , there is need to intensify intergenerational dialogue to enable easy interactions between the young and the old.
The Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ICESCO), Dr. Salim Al-Malik, reiterated the need to support the Afro-Arab Youth Council so as to achieve sustainable peace.
The Makerere University Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, Prof. Henry Arinaitwe, congratulated the Afro-Arab Youth Council upon reaching its 20th Anniversary and emphasized that issues affecting the youth need to be addressed seriously, since the majority of the people in Uganda are youths (75%).
“We stand with the objectives of the Afro Arab Youth Council in increasing awareness of issues affecting our youths, supporting activities in areas of voluntary work, promoting girl child education, though there is still room for improvement, and in creating awareness of HIV/AIDS.
“To change the lives of the youth, there is need for concerted efforts, and we shall continue to support the Afro Arab Youth Council. We believe we can fundementally change the world,” said Prof. Arinaitwe.
The Secretary General of the Afro Arab Youth Council, Hon. Dr. Abbas Agaba Mugisha , asked University students to take advantage of the existing linkages between Arabs and Africans to better their lives.
The Secretary General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Rosie Agoi, hailed ICESCO for the tremendous support towards the youth programs, citing E-Learning-Equipment that was donated by ICESCO her office.
” The world is going digital . We need better interventions for the youth to be able to live a comfortable life for the future generations. As UNESCO, we pledge our commitment to work with Afro Arab Youth Council in supporting youth programs,” said Mrs. Agoi.
