Refugees in Adjumani district and the host communities have been called upon to carefully utilize the limited shared natural resources to conserve the environment.
The appeal was made by the representatives of the central Government, relief agencies and Adjumani district local government during the district celebration of the World Refugee Day at Alere settlement on Wednesday.
The Office of the Prime Minister’s Settlement Commandant, Robert Andeoye said increased number of people in the district including the host communities and the refugees should not look at the surrounding trees as firewood or construction materials but important tools to conserve environment.

“The Government and partners strongly appeal for the responsible use of the shared natural resources to preserve and protect our environment from harmful human practices,” said Andoye

Adding: “Don’t look at the trees as firewood and construction materials but very important tools to protect the environment.”

He also called on the partners to amplify on the sensitization of refugees and the host communities to desist from the harmful human practices that result to environmental degradation.
“The Government together with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) are concerned with the pressure on environment and appeal to the partners to do more in the sensitizing of the refugees and the communities the importance of our environment and also to stay away from the activities that cause degradation,” he said.
He noted that the national celebration was put in Nakivale Isingiro district settlement camp because since the district, situated in the south western Uganda, is most affected by the environmental degradation resulting from the increased population.

The UNHCR country director Felistas Nabril emphasized on the planting of more trees.
“Tree planting should be the order of the day. Let us also get interested in tree in growing but not depleting them fast,” she said.
The event concluded with the planting of trees at the Alere Settlement camp.
United Nations agencies, Care Uganda, Action Against Hunger and other relief organizations participated in the event.
Adjumani district has 244,000 refugees in 19 settlements according to the Refugee Welfare Committee Chairperson, Moses Nyang. The biggest refugees settlement is Nyumazi with a population of 52,000 and the smallest is Maaji 1 with 584 refugees.
