SPORT– Rukiga district district on Saturday held a Cross Country run championship and bicycle racing that attracted several youths and some leaders. This is the first of its kind since Rukiga became an independent district.
At the climax of the events at Nyeikunama playground in Muhanga town council, Herman Kasozi was crowned the champion in the 13 kilometer bicycle racing from Rushebeya trading center to Muhanga town, while Banabas Keijuka became the first runners-up and Godfrey Niwagaba became the second runners-up.
Gonzaga Ssebuuma became the champion in the 10 kilometer cross country run while Mark Biryomumeisho became the first runners-up. In female cross Country run competitions, Marvelous Orishaba was the champion while Phionah Tuyisenge became the first runners-up.
Kapengo Muhima Namanya, a youth who organized the tournament said that he started the event with support from the Rukiga County Member of Parliament Hon Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish who contrinuted over Ugx 3 million and the Deputy Managing Director of National Water and Sewerage corporation, Silvia Arineitwe who contributed Ugx 1M.
Muhima added that he organized the event to remind people, especially the youths, that they can earn a living in sporting events instead of engaging in crimes like theft. The participants were awarded with different gifts including money, trophies, medals and certificates of participation.

Hon Ndyomugyenyi who also partcipated in Cross Country run told our reporter that he intends to keep supporting such events as part of developing the community. The former RUKIGA- District Woman Member of Parliament Elizabeth Aturinda Abaho participated in the bicycle race.
