In a national statement delivered today during the ongoing 55th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Uganda lauded South Sudan for progress made in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement and congratulated the Parties to the conflict for the progress made.
The statement, delivered by Uganda Mission Representative and Expert on Human Rights, Ms. Mary Namono Kibere, addressed the enhanced interactive dialogue on the Human Rights situation in South Sudan.
Ms. Kibere informed the Council that, as a neighbour and one of the guarantors to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), Uganda continues to follow closely the situation in South Sudan with keen interest.
“We welcome the efforts by South Sudan to promote and respect human rights and commend it for its cooperation with the human rights mechanisms, as confirmed in the report of the High Commissioner and members of the Commission today,” she said.
Ms. Kibere further informed the Council that Uganda specifically commends the Government for implementing the Action Plan for the Armed Forces on accountability including addressing sexual and domestic-related offences.
“Since the last session of this Council, we have witnessed some positive progress in the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement and congratulate the Parties for the progress made,” she added.
Kibere stressed that peace and stability, national reconciliation, and human rights are intrinsically linked and that “Uganda welcomes the fact that the ceasefire is holding”.
Ms. Kibere called for the international community to support and work with the Government of South Sudan and the region for sustainable peace, security, and development of the country.
“We are convinced that the South Sudan government’s requests to enable extension of the mandate are well founded, and we urge that the international community considers them, as Uganda will continue to play its part in the framework of IGAD in solidarity and commitment to support long-lasting peace and development in South Sudan” she concluded.
