Read Time:1 Minute, 44 SecondRwanda’s Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa has been elected the new deputy Chairperson African Union Commission (AUC).The Rwandan candidate Saturday gathered 42 out of 55 votes from Member States to clinch Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission job.The election took place at Africa Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.She ended Uganda’s second attempt at the job having forwarded Prof. Pamela Kasabiiti Mbabazi,51, the Chairperson of the National Planning Authority of Uganda.The last Ugandan to attempt to contest at the AU former Vice President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe was in 2017. Faki Moussa Mahamat won the final vote, several rounds after Dr Kazibwe had fallen out of the race.Other contestants in the yesterday race included; Hasna Barkat Daoud, a Djiboutian lawyer and former government minister; Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, a Ghanian diplomat; and Fatoumata C.M. Jallow Tambajang, the former vice president of the Gambia.“My very sincere gratitude and appreciation for the trust and honor that the Heads of States and Government of the African Union have bestowed on my country and in my person,” Dr Monique tweeted.She added: “I commit to serve with dedication and to the best of my ability under your wise guidance.”ProfileDr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa is the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda since May 2011.Prior to that, she served as Minister of Trade and Industry (2008-2011) and Minister of State in charge of Economic Planning in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (2003-2008).Dr. Monique is a holder of a PhD in Economics and a Doctorate of Commerce Honoris Causa, both obtained from Stellenbosch University, South Africa.She is an influential voice in financial inclusion in her country and on international scene as well as a passionate actor in women’s economic empowerment and financial inclusion.Dr. Monique is a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion’s Gender Inclusive Finance Committee, an alumna of Women’s World Banking African Advisory Council, and Founding Member & Chairperson of New Faces New Voices Rwanda.She is a wife and mother.
