Today the Forum for Democratic Change and ruling National Resistance Movement parties joined all peace loving to celebrate the life of Archbishop Janani Luwum.
Janani Jakaliya Luwum was the archbishop of the Church of Uganda from 1977 and one of the most influential leaders of the modern church in Africa.
He was arrested in February 1977 and died shortly after.
Rev. Canon Dr. Alfred Olwa was elected third Bishop of Lango Diocese said hersonally saw Archbishop Janani Luwum.
“His air, personally and love have never left my memory. Luwum walked the talk by giving the young people opportunities. Parents, leaders and the church should engage the young.”
He said martyrdom has claimed Janan Luwum. He is with the Lord.
“He stood for the word of God. Rise up and leave by the standards of the Lord. Only then will you have a fulfilled life.”
Former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Ambassador Olara Otunnu said Luwum was a unifying factor that calmed the waters within the church in Uganda.
He was one person who took seriously the notion of being a Ugandan, African and leader of the church of Christ in the world.
“In today’s Uganda where we speak about fighting sectarianism, Janan Luwum is particularly relevant. He is a leader who wasn’t materialistic. In whatever direction you look, we are not in a good place as a country. The issue would be what is the role of leaders both political and religious. There’s a big lesson for religious leaders especially from the life of Archbishop Janan Luwum.”
Otunnu said this has everything to do with Idi Amin the person and president of Uganda at that time.
According to him, the grandchildren and children are not responsible for his actions.
