Dreadlocked forward Frank Kalanda scored a hat-trick as Police cruised to an emphatic 3-1 victory over Wakiso Giants on Saturday, ending an eight-match winless run in the Uganda Premier League.
Police had gone eight games winless since a 3-1 away win against relegated Tooro United on 1st March during match-day 19. They had registered four losses and draws apiece but still stuck in the relegation zone.
Back to the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, the Purple Sharks drew first blood when Moses Aliro finished off a Titus Sematimba swift low pass in just five minutes.
On the 31st minute, Kalanda brought the game on level terms, converting from the penalty mark after overlapping left back Duncan Sseninde was brought down inside the forbidden area by Edward Satulo.
Eight minutes later, “Machete” as he’s profoundly known brilliantly headed home an inviting cross by budding midfielder Yusuf Ssozi as the Cops went into the driving seat
Kalanda then completed his hat-trick at the stroke of halftime after tapping home Sseninde’s begging cross from the left for Police to take a 3-1 commanding lead at halftime.
Police forward Juma Balinya (White) dribbling past his marker.
From recess, Police resorted to conservativeness and sat at the back as Wakiso Giants kept pilling pressure for a come back going forward.
Interim coach John Luyinda would then introduce Timothy Muwanguzi, Tony Kiwalazi, Reuben Kimera and Juma Balinya as the Cops held on for a win.
Victory resurrected Police’s survival hopes despite remaining in the relegation zone. The 2005 champions have 28 points in the 14th place, just one away from safety.
Police will play against BUL FC on March day 29 at the MTN Omondi stadium next Saturday, 14th May.
Wakiso Giants remained 7th placed on 36 points and will play host to champions Vipers Sports Club on the same day.
