Verah Tumuheki, District Council representative to Kabale University
NEWS- Kabale district council has today finally elected the Northern and central divisions’ female councilor Verah Tumuheki as the council’s representative to the Kabale University council amid tight election and controversy from district councilors.
The election started with councilors disagreeing on whether the speaker should take part in an election or not. The position on the University council fell vacant last year when the then council representative and the Kabale district chairperson Patrick Besigye Keihwa died.
According to the local government act, one member of the district council elected by majority councilors in whose jurisdiction the public University is situated shall be allowed on the council.
In March this year, the council failed to get the representative because the matter was forwarded to the solicitor-general for guidance on the whether to choose the representative by nomination or election before the solicitor general guided the council representative should be chosen council through an election.
Last month, the matter was again put on the order paper and the two interested members including the Kahungye male district councilor March Boaz and the central and Northern divisions’ female councilor Verah Tumuheki were nominated and they tied up at 17votes.
Today during the last council session in this financial year held at the district council hall in Kabale municipality, the same two members were re-nominated and the district speaker Flavia Nyinakiza Kanagizi before she declined to stand.
In an election that was presided over by the clerk to council Gordon Manzi, Tumuheki polled 18 votes whereas her closest competitor March Boaz polled 16. Tumuheki was declared by the district speaker Flavia Nyinakiza and asked to cooperate with district councilors.
Speaking to our reporter shortly after the council, Tumuheki pledged to ensure cooperation and presentation of views for district councilors to the University council.
