A woman from Luweero District, who was recently arrested and pleaded guilty to abusing her child, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Appearing before Luweero Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 September 2022, Dorothy Nabulime was punished for subjecting her two-year-old girl to cruelty, inhuman treatment and inflicting bodily harm.
The Magistrate said whereas Nabulime had pleaded for leniency because she is a victim of sexual abuse, she has to be taken away from the public for her own safety and also to serve as an example to the rest.
Nabulime, a resident of Busula, in Katikamu Sub County, Luwero district was arrested on 3rd September, after a video clip showing her beating the two-year-old child went viral.
Speaking after the court ruling, Joyce Namigadde, Luweero District Probation Officer, said Nabulime’s sentence was a fair one, which will help her to reform.
She added that Nabulime had a difficult childhood, the reason she behaved the way she did.
“She has psychosocial issues because she had a difficult childhood. She was one time defiled and her mother was a single parent. She dropped out of school at P.7. Therefore she had to be given a sentence that is light and lenient,” Ms Namigadde said.
She added that Nabulime’s two-year-old girl is under safe protection.
