The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces has cautioned NUP presidential candidate Bobi Wine against dragging it into his political allegations, and advised him to follow the legal steps to address all concerns about his campaign.
The UPDF declined to respond directly to the allegations this morning that some of Bobi Wine’s campaign team members were being held in Military barracks.
Bobi Wine claimed on New Year’s Day that his colleagues Nubian Li, Eddie Mutwe and over 18 others were “being held in a military barracks.”
“ Lawyers, family and doctors have been denied access to them,” he said.
The NUP members were arrested on Wednesday in Kalangala district where Bobi Wine had gone to campaign.
Police said the detained were facing charges related to holding mass rallies that could spread Covid 19, and that others had been filmed deflating police car tyres among others.
All the arrested were moved to Masaka Police Station while Bobi Wine was airlifted to his home.
In a social media post today, Bobi Wine said the rest of the team detained at Masaka Police “ were badly beaten last night.”
However , when asked to respond to the claims, UPDF deputy spokesman Let Col Deo Akiiki told Chimpreports, “We can’t answer all politically inclined accusations. We shall do our part as security to keep the country safe.”
Akiiki also said he was not aware of any members of a specific political leaning being held by the UPDF, but pointed out that the army often works hand in hand with the police.
“Any operations or arrests are under the joint security architecture and the leading force is police. So I advise anyone having complaints to begin with police,” he said.
“It is the order of the day that when one misses his relative or friend he reports to police not the army.”
