The police and military this Wednesday arrested Bobi Wine and his crew in Kalangala t
National Unity Platform (NUP) Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, has been arrested.
Bobi and about a dozen of his close associates were apprehended in Kalangala Island, central Uganda where he was expected to hold a rally today.
He’s expected to be airlifted to Kampala.
A military chopper was sent to Kalangala possibly to return Bobi to Kampala.
Bobi’s bodyguard Eddie Mutwe (L) was also arrestedPolice are yet to give reasons for their decision considering the Electoral Commission didn’t categorize Kalangala among the COVID-19 hotspots where campaigns have been suspended.
According to EC’s updated campaign programme, Bobi was today expected to hold a campaign meeting in Kalangala.
MV Kalangala, the ferry which carried Bobi’s cars from Masaka, also had teargas trucks on board.
Some journalists covering Bobi were temporarily arrested before being released by security personnel.
The chopper which is expected to airlift Bobi from KalangalaSecurity remains tight in Kalangala with the military and anti-riot police personnel reinforcing local police at the island.
In the 2016 elections, President Museveni won Kalangala with 53% of the vote with his main rival Dr Kizza Besigye coming second with 42%.
The main economic activities at the island are fishing and tourism.
Bobi Wine has previously been arrested for violating Health Ministry guidelines during campaigns, sparking violence on different parts of the country.
