The Anti-Corruption High Court has fixed tomorrow 30th December 2020 as the date it will consider the bail application for Human Rights Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo who is on remand on charges of Money Laundering.
Court ordered Kitalya Prison to produce Opiyo in court tomorrow via video conferencing.
“You are hereby directed to produce Nicholas Opiyo via Video Conferencing in court Room No.1 at High court Building Kampala before Hon Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga on 30th day of December 2020 at 9.00am.” reads part of the production warrant
Opiyo on Monday appeared virtually before His worship Moses Nabende the Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate who read to him the
charges which he denied.
The Magistrate declined to entertain his bail application on grounds only High court has jurisdiction to hear bail applications arising from offences of that nature.
He was remanded till January 11th 2021 when he will appear again for mentioning of his case.
Opiyo was arrested in Kamwokya with two other lawyers and detained at Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Kireka.
He was produced in Nakawa Magistrates court and later remanded to Kitalya.
Prosecution contends that on 8th October 2020 at ABSA Bank Garden City, Opiyo acquired USD 340,000 through Account number 6004078045 in the names Chapter Four Uganda knowing that funds were proceeds of crime.
