Uganda Girls team that won the inaugural CECAFA U17 Championship last year
India has withdrawn from hosting the long awaited FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup tournament leaving the event’s status hanging in balance.
ChimpReports understands that the India Football Federation (AIFF) have pulled out following a rise in the Covid-19 cases in the region hence rendering the country unsafe to host the tournament.
Initially, the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup tournament was slated for November 2020 before it was rescheduled for February 17th to March 7th next year.
According to a Ghanaian journalist Ayishatu Zakaria, AIFF has asked FIFA to consider another host nation for the tournament.
“India pulls out of hosting the U17 @FIFAcom women’s World Cup due to rise in Covid-19 cases. @ghanafaofficial asked Ghana’s U20 and U17 Women’s national team to go home awaiting new directives,” Ayishatu tweeted.
India’s decision to pull out from harbouring the championship leaves the status of the tournament in suspense. However, FIFA is yet to release an official communication concerning the competition’s future.
Currently, Uganda U17 Girls team are in camp in preparation for their final qualification round against Cameroon scheduled for this month.
Uganda will play host to Cameroon at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on the 31st October before the return leg in Yaounde, Cameroon that will come two weeks after.
