Members of National Crime Preventers’ Forum (NCPF) in Kampala have received a major boost in the ongoing efforts to fully revive the establishment.
The crime preventers in the Greater Kampala yesterday received up to Shs 180million from the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) to go into their small groupings and support the member’s economic ventures.
OWC was recently brought on board to help with the reactivation of the group which had gone in a lull over the past years is back.
The relaunch took place earlier this month in Gulu district, with Gen Salim Saleh who is also the national coordinator of the OWC as its new patron.
officials addressing the crime presentersDuring the Wednesday meeting at Club Abligato in Kampala, all 18 Crime preventers in Greater Kampala received Shs 10million each.
This money was pledged earlier to the crime preventers by President Yoweri Museveni back in 2018.
The meeting, the crime preventers were also briefed on foundational security and their role in society as they participate in productive activities.
According to sources who attended the meeting, the Crime Preventers Cooperative Union also introduced a new partner, Afriland First Bank that they focus on a capacitation drive of SACCOs.
Among others, the revamped crime preventers forum has beenm tasked to mobilise support for President Yoweri Museveni in next year’s elections and also to guard his vote on election day.
The crime preventers forum was instituted back in 2013 by then Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, as a paramilitary outfit meant to bolster efforts against the rising crime levels in the country then. The IGP introduced the outfit alongside the concept of community policing to increase neighborhood watch and vigilance.
However, when Kayihura was replaced as IGP, they group collapsed in the leadership vacuum.
