The outgoing Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Hon Nabilah Naggayi Sempala has been successfully named the flag bearer for the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Kampala Lord Mayor Race.
Mrs Nabilah floored her only contender one Hajj Kadra Ssali, after the two presented their credentials before the NUP Electoral Commission.
She scored a total of 166 points out of 200 from four judges of the commission, while Mr Ssali managed 87 points out of 200.
Speaking to press after her nomination, Mrs Nabilah described the development as a big honour.
“I think that Kampala deserves a fresh start; a new president and new Lord Mayor. I think that once Ugandans have elected Hon Robert Kyagulanyi as their president, he should have his mayor in the city.”
Nabilah also took time off to slam her former party the FDC for what she described as a nasty experience she had there.
Nabilah was rejected by the FDC when she sought its flag for the mayoral race.
She had served for three terms in parliament on the FDC card and also in its administration as its spokesperson 5 years ago.
Nabilah further attacked the FDC for “doing only lip service when it comes to women serving in top positions.”
“I am happy that here, NUP respects women and does not patronize them,” she said.
Mrs Nabilah decided to seek the NUP flag for the mayoral race after the new party’s initial flag bearer Latif Sebagala suddenly dropped out the race.
On why she is abandoning her parliamentary role, Nabilah said she thought she had done enough.
“Because of democracy, I thought that overstaying is a problem in Uganda. I now want another strong lady to take over, and I am seeking an executive position where fresh ideas are backed by experience,” she said.
