The Prime Minister of Acholi Chiefdom, Mr. Ambrose Olaa has implored Cultural and Community leaders to use culture to spur development in their area.
“Culture provides the holistic ingredients for any development and all that development requires is in tradition and cultures.’’ Says Mr. Olaa.
Mr. Olaa added that people and leaders who leave out culture in their quest for development rarely succeed because Culture is such an important part of development.
Mr. Olaa made the remarks on Friday while addressing a meeting of Cultural and community development leaders from Acholi, Alur and Karamoja in Gulu City.
He also revealed that at Acholi Cultural Institution, they are revisiting culture and trying to promote it so that it works for the people.
The Acholi Chiefdom premier cited many examples of development initiatives in Northern Uganda that have not changed many people’s life, because they did incorporate the aspect of Cultures in them.
“We are beginning to question how many years some of these developments initiatives like PRDP, NUSAF and Operation Wealth Creation have been here but people are still crying of poverty.’’
Mrs. Emily Drani, the Executive director of Cross-cultural Foundation of Uganda said at the event that they are working with Cultural leaders to link culture and different development Initiative.
She added that in conjunction with UN Women and the Ministry of Gender, they are implementing a project titled ‘’Harnessing cultural resources to end violence against women and girls and promote sexual and reproductive health and rights in Uganda.
