MoRoots’ latest release Tulo tells the story of motherhood and the trials, trauma, and triumph that come with it. Using the traditional lullaby tune “Tulo Tulo kwata ‘omwana,” this is a mother singing to her child.
The song celebrates the strength of motherhood and the prayer a mother would have for her children – to be fierce, to live long, to be strong.
The kiganda rhythms and drums can be heard as the song builds, again an ode to the traditional rhythms of central Uganda.
About ROOTED (the EP)
ROOTED is an EP that explores themes of traditional Ugandan music and sounds and expresses them through a futuristic lens. Each of the songs is rooted in a local musical idea, sometimes familiar, often nostalgic, and always a force.
Recording the project in Dolby Atmos gave me a creative vision of creating not just music, but soundscapes that would situate the music in a particular place and time (by the river, outdoors, driving down a road in the wind.
I also thought about the idea of creating cinematic sound and visual moments in the music, where you could vividly picture a landscape or a character moving through the song.
Who is MoRoots?
MoRoots is a proudly Ugandan singer, songwriter, composer, saxophonist, classical pianist, and a part-time struggling traditional dancer; dually based in London and Kampala, Uganda.
MoRoots fell in love with music from the womb whilst listening to her mother’s hymns. Combining her classical musical training with her lengthy experience in Jazz and Blues, MoRoots’ genre is self-described as Future-Afro-Soul and very delicious.
It’s a mash-up of Funk, RnB, Neo-Soul, Electronic experimentation, and a strong influence of African rhythms.
Those closest to her describe her as an introvert and an extremely free spirit, which is also a powerful and complex makeup of her stage performance.
MoRoots is the lead vocalist of the “SoulDeep” crew and has earned the admiration and affection of countless fans in Uganda, serving as both inspiration and role model. She is now on a mission to take that global.
Recent Performances include a self-curated “silent” performance series coined Quiet Time 2017, Kigali Jazz Junction 2016, Bayimba International Music Festival 2016, Milege Music Festival 2016, Blankets & Wine 2015, Miss Uganda 2015, and a BBC Rising Star feature.
