Ugandan comedian Okello Okello has finally revealed the story behind the unusual stage name that has become one of the most recognizable brands in the country’s comedy scene.
Speaking in a recent interview, the stand up comic explained that the name was not originally a calculated stage identity but something that evolved naturally from his real name and cultural roots.
Okello said he comes from northern Uganda where the name Okello is common among the Acholi. Over time, friends and colleagues began jokingly calling him “Okello Okello,” repeating the name in a playful way whenever he introduced himself.
Instead of resisting it, he embraced the double name and turned it into his professional identity.
According to the comedian, the repetition made the name easier to remember and also added a humorous twist that fit perfectly with his personality as a performer. Before long, audiences at comedy shows had started referring to him that way, and the name stuck.
He noted that in comedy, branding matters just as much as the jokes themselves. Having a distinctive name helped him stand out in a growing entertainment industry where many performers compete for attention.
Today, “Okello Okello” has become more than just a nickname. It is a brand associated with witty storytelling, cultural observations and relatable Ugandan humour.
The comedian says he never imagined the playful repetition of his name would become such a strong identity, but it has since opened doors for him on major comedy stages, television appearances and social media platforms.
And for him, the lesson is simple: sometimes the things people laugh about first end up becoming your greatest asset.
