Pia Pounds has revealed that in 2016, long before her music career took off, she briefly worked as an Uber driver in a bid to earn a living and stay financially independent.
At the time, ride-hailing had just gained traction in Uganda and the business was paying fairly well. Pia says she could make between Shs50,000 and Shs70,000 a day, money that helped her cover basic needs like rent and food.
“I did Uber in 2016,” she recalled. “Back then it was paying well. You could make at least 50k or 70k a day, so it helped me survive.”
Pia explained that she did not own the car she was using. Instead, she had entered an arrangement with a man who gave her the vehicle to drive while sharing the earnings and costs. What she did not know at the time was that the car had been stolen.
“I got the car from a guy who told me to drive it and we share the money,” she said. “But unfortunately, the guy had stolen the car. They scammed me.”
The shocking discovery came one day while she was parked in Bunga. Two police officers, accompanied by another man, approached her and informed her that the vehicle she was driving had been reported stolen.
“They found me parked around Bunga and two police officers and one man came to me and told me the car was stolen,” she recounted.
She was immediately taken to Kabalagala Police Station, where she recorded a statement about the incident.
For Pia, the ordeal was frightening and confusing, especially since she had unknowingly walked into the situation while simply trying to make an honest living. Despite the setback, the experience became one of the many difficult chapters in her journey.
