Veteran producer Washington has said singer Weasel should be far wealthier given the dominance of the Goodlyfe Crew over the past decade.
For nearly 15 years, the duo of Weasel and the late Moses Radio churned out hit after hit, shaping Uganda’s modern sound and dominating airwaves across the region.
According to Washington, that level of consistency should have translated into significant financial success.
He argued that Weasel ought to be among the wealthiest artists in the country, considering the volume and impact of the music the group produced over the years.
However, the producer acknowledged that the industry at the time lacked proper systems to protect artists and ensure they fully benefited from their work.
“At that time we were just doing things out of excitement,” he said. “I accept that we made some mistakes because we didn’t know what to do. But now we know what to do.”
Washington explained that many songs were recorded and released without formal agreements, clear ownership structures, or proper documentation, making it difficult for artists to earn consistently from their music.
He now advocates for a more professional approach, including signing split sheets, registering songs, and clearly outlining how revenue is shared among all contributors.
“We want to do things in an organized way this time—get the split sheet, register the music, and set the percentages,” he said.
His remarks add to ongoing calls within the industry for stronger systems to ensure artists benefit fairly from their work in the evolving digital music economy.
