Ugandan singer Gift Ov Kaddo has demanded that several music download platforms immediately remove his songs, accusing them of profiting from his work without permission.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kaddo singled out websites such as HowweBiz and DJ Erycom, claiming they have been uploading and selling his music without compensating him.
His outburst comes in the wake of the recently passed Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which is expected to strengthen protections for artists and ensure they earn from their work.
Kaddo said he is no longer willing to tolerate what he described as years of exploitation, particularly calling out DJ Erycom for allegedly building wealth off artists’ music without sharing any revenue.
“I no longer want my music being sold without my consent. No one even reaches out to me, yet every time I release a song, it is quickly uploaded for sale. Who gave them that authority? They should take down my music because I refuse to keep being exploited,” He said
The singer also expressed frustration over the financial sacrifices artists make to produce music, only for it to be distributed freely and monetised by third parties.
According to him, the situation has left many artists struggling, despite investing heavily in their craft.
Kaddo questioned whether such practices help grow the industry or instead undermine it, arguing that artists deserve fair compensation for their work.
His remarks reflect growing tension between musicians and digital platforms, as the industry prepares for changes expected under the new copyright law aimed at curbing piracy and improving revenue streams for creatives.
