The Uganda Police Force has issued new guidelines ahead of the National Cleaning Day scheduled for Saturday, 29 August 2026, urging members of the public to take part in cleaning their homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces and public spaces.

The nationwide exercise is intended to promote cleaner, healthier and safer communities.

As part of the exercise, the movement of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and vessels will be restricted across the country between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Police has advised members of the public to remain within their respective localities during the restricted period and participate in the cleaning exercise. Normal movement will resume after 10:00 a.m.

However, Police said some categories of people will be allowed to travel during the three-hour restriction.

Patients travelling for scheduled medical treatment will be permitted to move, provided they have relevant medical documentation. Emergency service vehicles will also be allowed to operate.

Medical personnel who are on duty will be permitted to travel if they have valid identification. Security personnel and private security guards on duty are also exempted from the restriction.

Cross-border vehicles using designated major transport corridors will be allowed to continue operating. People travelling abroad will also be permitted to travel if they can provide proof of their journey.

Foreign tourists are among those exempted from the movement restrictions, while journalists on official duty will also be allowed to travel.

Police has urged the public to cooperate with security personnel who will be deployed to enforce the guidelines and warned against confrontations or altercations during the exercise.

The public has been encouraged to plan their movements accordingly and use the three-hour period to participate in the National Cleaning Day activities within their communities.

Matchday One of the 2026/27 Premier League season started on Friday last week and comes to an end tonight when Chelsea travel to Fulham. In between, there has been plenty to talk about, from Manchester United’s surprise 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City to Tottenham’s 3-0 loss at Brentford, Liverpool’s dramatic draw with Newcastle and Manchester City’s late win over Bournemouth.

For Ugandan fans, every result comes with its own story.

A Manchester United fan has probably spent the weekend defending that Hull result. Arsenal supporters have had a little more confidence after their winning start, while Liverpool and Newcastle fans still have that late drama to argue about. And somewhere, a Chelsea supporter is probably being reminded that their team still has a game to play.

That is what the return of the Premier League means in Uganda.

The football is back, but so is everything that comes with it: club jerseys, viewing spots, online banter, team analysis, predictions, and the overall football conversations that continue long after the final whistle.

For some fans, the Premier League is a weekend routine. For others, it is the reason to meet friends, find a good place to watch the game and spend a few hours enjoying the action together.

That is the Ugandan way of experiencing the Premier League, and it is the kind of matchday spirit Guinness, the Official Beer of the Premier League, is once again bringing to life through its Matchday experiences.

During the opening weekend, Guinness took the celebrations to different venues across the country, giving fans more than just a place to watch the games.

Among the biggest were at Millennium Grounds in Lugogo, Kampala, and Rwenzori Square in Kasese, where live entertainment, music and fan engagement added to the excitement around the fixtures.

The opening round has already provided plenty of that.

Tonight, Fulham and Chelsea will bring the four-day opening Matchday to a close. Whatever the result, the banter will continue and the jerseys will not be going back into the wardrobe just yet.

There are still 37 Matchdays to come, with bigger fixtures, fiercer rivalries and plenty more opportunities for Ugandan fans to gather and enjoy the their favorite league.

Business magnate Dr Sudhir Ruparelia has received a dividend of Shs2.25 billion from Bank of Baroda Uganda, where is the second-largest shareholder and its biggest individual shareholder.

The dividend cheque, presented to Sudhir on Monday, August 24, relates to the bank’s financial year ended December 31, 2025. Bank of Baroda Uganda declared a dividend of Shs6 per share for 2025, an increase from Shs4 per share paid for the previous financial year.

Sudhir owns 375,163,500 shares in the bank, giving him a gross dividend of Shs2,250,981,000.

At Monday’s closing price of Shs63 per share, his holding was worth about Shs23.64 billion.

According to Bank of Baroda Uganda’s audited 2025 annual report, the bank’s Indian parent company, Bank of Baroda, remains the dominant shareholder, with 11,999,992,500 shares, representing an 80 per cent stake in the Ugandan subsidiary.

Sudhir holds 2.5 per cent, followed by the National Social Security Fund with 314,736,618 shares, representing 2.09 per cent.

The Bank of Baroda investment forms part of Sudhir’s wider exposure to Uganda’s listed financial sector where he is one of the country’s most prominent individual investors on the Uganda Securities Exchange. Publicly available shareholding records show that he also owns about 330,723,247 shares in Stanbic Uganda Holdings Limited, representing approximately 0.65 per cent of the company.

At Stanbic’s Monday closing price of Shs101, the stake was worth about Shs33.40 billion.

Taken together, Dr Ruparelia’s disclosed holdings in Bank of Baroda Uganda and Stanbic Uganda Holdings were valued at approximately Shs57.04 billion at Monday’s closing prices.

Sudhir is the country’s wealthiest individual with his vast empire spanning real estate with his Meera Investments and Crane Management Services, hospitality under his Speke Group of Hotels Umbrella, education from elementary level to university, media, insurance and horticulture among other ventures.

National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and businessman Amos Nzeyi have agreed on a plan to resolve their long-running dispute over 55 acres of land in Temangalo.

Under the agreement, Nzeyi will hand over 10 acres of the disputed land to NSSF and buy the remaining 45 acres at the prevailing market price.

The value of the 45 acres will be determined after the land is assessed by a government valuer, an independent valuer and Nzeyi’s own valuer. The three valuers will establish the current market value of the property.

NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota disclosed the agreement on 24 August when he and Nzeyi appeared before Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).

The committee subsequently postponed its inquiry to allow the land to undergo valuation.

The disputed 55 acres are part of the 463.87 acres that NSSF bought from Nzeyi and ARMA Limited in 2008 for Shs11 billion.

The entire property is covered by six certificates of title, all registered in NSSF’s name and currently in the fund’s possession. However, NSSF has never taken full physical possession of the land because Nzeyi has continued to occupy the disputed 55 acres, where his country home is located.

NSSF Legal Director Agnes Tibayeita Isharaza told COSASE that the proposed settlement followed negotiations between the two parties.

She said Nzeyi had agreed to buy back the disputed 45 acres at the prevailing market price, subject to valuation.

However, Isharaza stressed that the agreement was not yet final because it still requires several statutory approvals and clearances.
