  • WhatsApp to Hide Phone Numbers Behind Usernames in 2026: Privacy Boost or New Spam Frontier?

WhatsApp to Hide Phone Numbers Behind Usernames in 2026: Privacy Boost or New Spam Frontier?

Kampala Millions of Ugandans who rely on WhatsApp for everything from family communication and mobile money transactions to political mobilisation and small business operations could soon gain greater control over their privacy, following a major update announced by the platform’s parent company, Meta Platforms.

Beginning mid-2026, WhatsApp users will be able to create unique usernames — such as @yourname or @businessug — allowing them to send messages, make calls, and join groups without exposing their personal phone numbers. The feature, already common on platforms like Instagram and Telegram, is expected to roll out globally, including in Uganda.

According to the company, the feature will remain optional. Users will still need a phone number to register, but once a username is set, it becomes the primary way others can find and contact them.

    Why this matters in Uganda

With more than 10 million users locally, WhatsApp has evolved into a critical communication and commerce tool. However, it has also exposed users to persistent risks — from fraud and harassment to unwanted political messaging.

Phone numbers in Uganda are tightly linked to personal identity through mandatory SIM card registration, making them a gateway to sensitive personal data. This has left many users vulnerable to scams, stalking, and misuse of information.

The introduction of usernames could significantly reduce these risks by allowing users to keep their numbers private while maintaining full functionality on the platform.

    Businesses get verified handles

In addition to personal usernames, WhatsApp is introducing Business-Scoped User IDs, enabling companies to register branded handles. However, the company says businesses will only be permitted to message users who have given explicit consent.

This is likely to be a key test in Uganda, where unsolicited promotional messages, loan offers, and online scams have become widespread. Enforcement of user consent will determine whether the new system protects users or simply reshapes how spam is delivered.

    Risks to watch

While the update marks a major step forward, concerns remain:

    • Username squatting: High-demand names and brand identities could be quickly claimed by opportunists. Early registration will be critical.
    • Surveillance concerns: Phone numbers will still be linked to accounts behind the scenes, meaning access by authorities or third parties remains a possibility.
    • Legal compliance: Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 requires clear user consent for marketing communications. Questions remain about how strictly this will be enforced.

    What users should do

    • Update WhatsApp regularly and watch for official rollout notices.
    • Prepare a simple, professional username in advance.
    • Avoid sharing your phone number unnecessarily.
    • Report spam and suspicious messages promptly.

This update represents one of the most significant privacy shifts in WhatsApp’s history. For Ugandans who have long complained about their phone numbers being widely circulated, it offers a long-awaited layer of protection.

But as with many Big Tech promises, its success will depend on enforcement. Whether this change truly empowers users — or opens a new frontier for digital marketing abuse — will become clear in the months following its rollout.

“Busoga will dance on” — Rachael Magoola fires back at Alien Skin – Sqoop

Veteran artist and cultural voice Rachael Magoola has stepped into the conversation about Alien Skin’s recent remarks that he will never perform in Busoga region again.

For all the buzz surrounding Alien Skin’s decision, Magoola framed it as exactly what it is: a personal choice, not an industry crisis.

“If he doesn’t perform,” she noted, “other artists like Acidic Vokoz and Tina Baby will still perform in Busoga.” She said during an interview on Sanyuka TV.

Her remarks come in response to rising tensions surrounding Alien Skin, who recently declared he would no longer perform in Busoga, a region known for its vibrant love of music and live entertainment.

The women’s representative in Bugweri District also cautioned against violence in the music industry, saying there should be no room for it.

“There should be no room for violence in the entertainment industry,” she stated, her tone measured but resolute. In a space often fueled by ego, competition, and public spectacle, her words cut through with a refreshing sense of clarity , a reminder that music, at its core, is meant to unite, not divide.

  • Lawyers Demand Shs1 Billion and apology from Journalist Ndawula Over Claims on UHRC Boss Wangadya

Lawyers representing Mariam Wangadya have demanded a public apology and Shs1 billion in damages from journalist Stanley Ndawula over alleged defamatory statements targeting the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) boss.

In a formal notice, Wangadya’s legal team accuses Ndawula of the Investigator publishing false and malicious claims that have harmed her reputation and undermined her authority as head of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. The lawyers argue that the allegations lack factual basis and portray their client in a negative light without evidence.

“Our attention has been drawn to a recent post on your X handle to wit “Stanley The Investigator” dated 7th/03/2026 and an article you authored and published online date 8th/03/2026, wherein you make grave, unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations against Our Client,” the notice of intent to sue read in part.

The lawyers from Signature Advocates require that Ndawula immediately retracts statements, issue an unconditional public apology, and compensate Wangadya with Shs1 billion for reputational damage, warning that that failure to comply will result in legal proceedings.

Wangadya’s legal representatives insist that the allegations against their client are both unfair and injurious, particularly given her role in a constitutional body tasked with protecting human rights.

They further contend that the publication has the potential to erode public trust in the commission by casting doubt on its leadership. As chairperson, Wangadya’s credibility is central to the institution’s mandate, and any attack on her integrity, they argue, directly affects the commission’s standing.

Ndawula had not publicly responded to the demand by the time of filing this report. It remains unclear whether he will issue a retraction or contest the claims in court.

Tracy Melon clarifies Mercedes Benz gift, says she’s single and surprise giver is not her partner

Tracy Melon has come out to clear the air surrounding the flashy Mercedes Benz she showed off on International Women’s Day, revealing that the luxury ride was a gift, not a personal purchase.

Speaking about the surprise gesture, Tracy said that she did not spend her own money on the car. Instead, she described it as a token of appreciation from an anonymous admirer who was impressed by her hard work and discipline in the music industry.

According to the singer, the gift holds even more meaning considering she has not yet spent three full years in the industry.

It wasn’t from my money, I didn’t buy it. Someone bought it for me and appreciated my work, singing nicely and carrying myself with respect. They encouraged me to keep going, so it was just a token of appreciation for who I am.

Tracy also addressed speculation about the identity of the mystery giver, firmly dismissing claims that the person is her romantic partner. She maintained that she is currently single and not involved in any relationship.

The giver isn’t my man. I’m very single,” she said. “There was no deal attached to it. I was actually shocked myself, it left me wondering.

She further clarified that the gift did not come from her manager, although he is aware of its source. Tracy noted that everyone on her team is happy for her, even as the identity of the generous individual remains undisclosed.

I can’t reveal who gave it to me because they prefer to stay anonymous. But honestly, it could be anybody.
