Equity Bank Uganda, Modern Group strengthen partnership to drive business growth

As Uganda’s industrial sector continues to grow, businesses are increasingly looking for financial partners that can provide more than just access to credit.

For Modern Group of Companies, one of Uganda’s diversified business groups, the ability to work with a bank that understands its operations, responds quickly and can support its long-term ambitions has become an important part of its growth strategy.

This is driving the emerging partnership between Modern Group and Equity Bank Uganda, with the company highlighting the bank’s responsiveness and understanding of its business needs.

According to Modern Group Chief Executive Officer Jagdish Srivastava, the bank’s local teams have played a key role in building confidence in the partnership.

“What stands out most is the responsiveness of Equity’s ground team. They are proactive, approachable and quick to address matters as they arise,” Srivastava said.

He said the experience had demonstrated the value of having a banking partner that combines the resources of a major financial institution with an understanding of the challenges businesses face on the ground.

For Modern Group, which operates across several sectors and markets, timely financial support is particularly important as it seeks to expand its operations in Uganda and across East Africa.

“As a former international banker myself, I understand the distinct strategic advantages of working with one of the country’s leading financial institutions,” Srivastava said.

“Partnering with a major bank like Equity provides the scale, stability and institutional support needed to unlock long-term business growth.”

He added that Equity Bank’s approach to business had been positive and focused on finding solutions.

“Equity Bank’s team approaches business with a highly positive, solution-oriented mindset, and as our internal authorisation processes are finalised, we look forward to deepening this partnership across multiple financing areas,” he said.

Jagdish Srivastava, CEO of Modern Group, leading Gift Shoko, Managing Director of Equity Bank Uganda, on a strategic tour of the group’s manufacturing plant in Jinja.

Equity Bank also sees the relationship as an opportunity to support Modern Group beyond its current financing arrangements.

Ronald Nakhasanga, Equity Bank’s Regional Manager for the Eastern Region, described Modern Group as a key relationship for the bank, pointing to the company’s presence across sectors such as manufacturing, building materials and agro-processing.

“Modern Group represents a cornerstone relationship for our bank,” Nakhasanga said.

“Given their expansive footprint across diverse sectors, from manufacturing and building materials to agro-processing, the potential for shared growth is immense.”

He said the bank’s support would extend beyond traditional corporate banking, with the institution positioned to provide solutions across Modern Group’s wider business ecosystem.

“Our commitment goes beyond traditional corporate banking; we are strategically positioned to support their full ecosystem, driving value across their entire operational footprint,” he added.

The developing partnership highlights the growing importance of strong bank-business relationships as Ugandan companies expand and seek to compete in regional markets.

For businesses such as Modern Group, access to capital remains important, but having a financial institution that can respond to changing needs and provide practical, long-term support is equally critical.

  • Doja Cat Takes a Swipe at Tyga Over His AI Album

Doja Cat Takes a Swipe at Tyga Over His AI Album

Doja Cat has unexpectedly turned on Tyga over his use of artificial intelligence (AI) on his new album, $TARFACE.

The two artistes have worked together before, most notably on “Juicy” and “Freaky Deaky,” but their past collaborations did not stop Doja from taking a brutal swipe at the rapper during a livestream.

Nobody asked me anything about Tyga, but I just felt like saying this. Tyga is a p*nis for making an AI album.

Tyga has admitted using AI while producing $TARFACE, which draws heavily from 1980s sounds. However, he has rejected the suggestion that AI made the entire project.

He said the technology helped with elements such as synthesizers and guitar sounds, while he wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocals himself.

The album has also attracted attention for another reason. Pitchfork gave $TARFACE a 0.0/10 in a scathing review.

With the album already facing criticism from critics, Doja Cat’s blunt reaction has added another headline to Tyga’s controversial release.

  • UCC Report: Ugandans Moved 2.55 Billion Mobile Money Transactions Between April and June

UCC Report: Ugandans Moved 2.55 Billion Mobile Money Transactions Between April and June

If you have ever complained about how fast your mobile money balance disappears, the new UCC Q2 2026 Market Performance Report suggests you are far from alone.

Between April and June 2026, Ugandans registered 2.55 billion mobile money transactions, up from 2.37 billion in the first quarter. Mobile money registered subscriptions rose to 59.5 million, with 37.8 million of those actively transacting within 90 days. On average, every active mobile money user in the country now sends or receives money twice a month, at an average value of UGX 102,580 per transaction, itself an increase from UGX 100,690 in Q1.

Put together, the average Ugandan phone user is now spending UGX 15,349 a month on mobile services, up sharply from UGX 10,932 the previous quarter. Data is the biggest driver of that jump. Monthly data spend rose from UGX 6,118 to UGX 10,841 in just three months, even as the price per gigabyte effectively dropped, meaning people are not paying more per unit, they are simply consuming a lot more. Voice and SMS spend, by contrast, fell slightly, a sign that calling and texting are steadily losing ground to data-hungry apps.

The telecom industry felt the effect directly. Gross telecom revenue hit UGX 1.73 trillion in Q2 2026, its highest point in the last four quarters, up from UGX 1.60 trillion in Q1. Two operators alone accounted for a huge chunk of the regulatory side of that windfall: MTN Uganda remitted UGX 54.27 billion to UCC in June, while Airtel Uganda handed over UGX 42.9 billion in May, both as the statutory 2 percent levy on gross annual revenue that funds the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF), the pool that finances rural connectivity and digital inclusion projects across the country.

For students juggling boda fares, food money and airtime, the numbers confirm something you already feel in your pocket: mobile money is no longer a convenience, it is the plumbing of everyday transactions in Uganda.

    J. Cole’s ‘No Role Modelz’ Becomes 9th Rap Song to Hit 3 Billion Spotify Streams

    J. Cole‘s “No Role Modelz” has reached a streaming milestone that makes its long-running success even more impressive.

The 2014 hit has now passed 3 billion streams on Spotify, joining a small group of rap songs that have reached the mark.

The track joins Post Malone and 21 Savage‘s “Rockstar,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us,” Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams,” Travis Scott‘s “goosebumps,” Drake‘s “God’s Plan,” Eminem‘s “Without Me,” Kendrick Lamar and SZA‘s “All the Stars” and Tyler, The Creator’s “See You Again.”

Cole released “No Role Modelz” on 2014 Forest Hills Drive more than a decade ago, but the song has continued to attract listeners across generations.

And there is one detail that makes the milestone stand out: the song never received an official music video.

Despite that, “No Role Modelz” became one of Cole’s biggest hits and has remained a streaming favourite long after its original release.

“Her face was unrecognisable”: Family forced to dig up KIU student’s body after shocking Mulago mortuary mix-up

The family of the late Kairu Patricia, a newly enrolled student at Kampala International University (KIU), has shared a deeply painful account of the final moments before laying her to rest, describing confusion, anguish and unanswered questions surrounding her death.

Patricia, who had been missing for 10 days before her body was discovered, was laid to rest in Buyende District on Wednesday amid grief and growing calls for justice.

In a detailed emotional post, her friend Makana Kennedy Ndyamuhaki (@Makana_Kennedy) revealed the distress the family endured at Mulago National Referral Hospital after Patricia’s body was recovered.

“The circumstances surrounding her death have left us devastated. We could not even properly see her after her body was recovered from Mulago. By the time we got there, mortuary attendants had already buried her, forcing us to exhume her. Her face was unrecognisable,” he wrote.

Ndyamuhaki said the family was forced to exhume the body in order to properly identify Patricia before burial, a process he described as traumatic and deeply painful.

In his post, Ndyamuhaki confirmed that Patricia was finally laid to rest, but said the burial was overshadowed by grief and uncertainty over the circumstances of her death.

“Yesterday, we laid Patricia to rest amid deep pain, grief and so many unanswered questions. Her life was cruelly taken from her by unknown assailants,” he said.

Patricia had reportedly gone missing after leaving her hostel in Kansanga, sparking a 10-day search by family and friends before her body was later discovered in Nabbingo.

Her body had reportedly spent several days at Mulago mortuary before the family was informed.

Ndyamuhaki has since renewed calls for a thorough investigation into Patricia’s death, urging security agencies to intervene and provide answers.

“I reach out to you once again, pleading for your attention and support in ensuring that Patricia gets the justice she deserves,” he said, tagging senior police officials including @Tom_Magambo, @Damulira_Chris, and @PoliceUg.

“Her family deserves answers. Patricia deserves justice.”

While social media reports have circulated alleging that Patricia may have been raped, killed and dumped in an unfinished building in Nabbingo’s Bataka Lane, authorities have not confirmed these claims.

The Uganda Police Force has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the circumstances surrounding her death.

Patricia’s disappearance from Kansanga, her movement to Nabbingo, and the events leading to her death remain unclear as investigations continue.

Campus Bee understands that the family is still seeking clarity on how the KIU fresher ended up at Mulago mortuary and the exact circumstances that led to her death.

  • Chameleone: Single life is so fun, I can now freely look at women

Music star Jose Chameleone has opened up about his experience of single life, joking that one of the biggest changes is being able to admire women without worrying about being questioned.

Speaking to fans during a TikTok live session, Chameleone described his life as a bachelor as enjoyable and said he now feels freer than he did while married.

The singer said he previously had to be cautious whenever he looked at other women, even joking that he would hide behind his glasses to avoid attracting attention.

“Single life is so fun. Those days I used to even fear looking at women. But now, I have all the confidence to look at them without anyone stopping me,” he said.

Chameleone added that he no longer feels the need to hide his intentions, comparing the change to a wall being removed from his home.

“It feels like a wall fence was broken off my home. I used to disguise myself in my glasses to look at women, but now I boldly take them off and look as hard as I want because no one can question me,” he added.

His comments come amid reports about the ongoing breakdown of his marriage to Daniella Atim.

The couple got married in June 2008 at St James Catholic Parish in Kampala and were together for 16 years. Their relationship began facing challenges after they started living separately more than five years ago, following Daniella’s relocation to the United States with their children.

Daniella later filed for divorce, citing desertion, adultery and cruelty. In her court filings, she said the marriage had irretrievably broken down, accusing Chameleone of failing to provide the love, care and support she expected.

Vienna College Namugongo Launches Chris Kassami Memorial Economics Award

Vienna College Namugongo has honoured the legacy of its late director and renowned economist Chris Kassami by introducing an annual award for the school’s best-performing Economics student.

The Chris Kassami Memorial Economics Award was unveiled on Tuesday during the release of the school’s Cambridge examination results, with Heath Mulondo Walugembe becoming the first recipient after scoring 91 per cent in Economics.

Walugembe edged out three other students who each scored 90 per cent, Kigundu Abdulrahman, Twesige Melody Kukundakwe and Amia Rihanna Adubangu.

The award was established in memory of Kassami, who served as one of the directors of Vienna College Namugongo before his death in 2016.

Kassami, a celebrated economist, had during his lifetime pledged to recognise the student who achieved the highest mark in Economics at the school with an award and Shs1 million in cash.

A video played during Tuesday’s ceremony showed Kassami explaining his passion for Economics and his desire to encourage students to take the subject seriously.

He jokingly described himself as being “a little bit selfish as an Economist” as he announced his intention to reward the school’s top Economics student.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jassi Kassami, Chris Kassami’s son and a director at Vienna College, said the award provides a fitting way to preserve his father’s contribution to the school and his passion for Economics.

Jassi thanked the school administration, led by Principal Muhammed Kakiika, for reviving the initiative.

“Besides just Economics, we hope to award students in other subjects as well,” he said.

Principal Kakiika confirmed that the award will be presented annually to the student who achieves the highest mark in Economics.

The winner will receive an accolade alongside Shs1 million in cash.

Kakiika also praised the school’s teaching staff for their role in preparing students for the Cambridge examinations, noting that the strong performance was not limited to Economics.

He said students also registered impressive results in the sciences, attributing the performance to the commitment of both teachers and learners throughout the academic year.

The school said the annual award will not only celebrate academic excellence but also keep Kassami’s passion for Economics alive by encouraging more students to excel in the subject.

  • Winnie Nwagi hits back at critics questioning her changing ‘Nyash’

Ugandan singer Winnie Nwagi has responded to critics who have been questioning changes in her body, particularly the size of her backside.

The singer has recently attracted attention from social media users who claim that her once-famous fuller backside appears to have become smaller.

But Nwagi has dismissed the speculation, saying there is nothing unusual about the change and accusing people of paying too much attention to her body.

“What happened to the nyash? Nothing happened. It’s you who are stupid, I’m sorry to say. I still have my nyash,” Nwagi said.

She explained that losing weight can affect different parts of the body, including the backside, and said there is nothing wrong with her appearance changing.

“It’s just that someone loses a bit of weight and the weight can’t get lost and your bum remains huge, and it’s not a crime even if it becomes small,” she said.

Nwagi also urged people to stop scrutinising other people’s bodies and instead focus on their own lives.

She further defended those who choose to alter their appearance, saying everyone should be free to make changes that make them feel comfortable.
