The government is set to introduce a National Cleaning Day, with Ugandans expected to come together for community cleaning activities on the last Saturday of every month.
The initiative, according to the Office of the Prime Minister, will begin this Saturday from 8am to 11am and aims to encourage communities across the country to take collective responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, healthy and safe.

Police in Katwe have recovered 120 suspected stolen iPhones and arrested four people as investigations continue into a suspected network involved in the theft and illegal trade of mobile phones and spare parts in Kampala.
The operation follows the theft of a police officer’s phone on 16 July 2026 while he was on duty at Top City Plaza in Kisenyi Cell, Kampala.
Investigations led to the arrest of Mugabi Richard at his home in Kakajo, Kisenyi Cell, at about 3:00am on 18 July. During questioning, police allege that Mugabi admitted to stealing the officer’s phone while the officer was resting in a vehicle.
Police say Mugabi later handed the phone to an accomplice, who sold it for Shs900,000 to Mugerwa Juma, the owner of a mobile phone shop at Cooper Complex in Kampala. The stolen phone has since been recovered.
Based on information obtained during the investigation, police raided Mugerwa’s shop on 21 July and recovered seven functioning iPhones, five iPads, three laptops, phone-resetting machines, a microscope and a large quantity of iPhone spare parts.
Mugerwa was arrested during the operation. Police later searched his vehicle and recovered 120 more iPhones, ranging from the iPhone 17 Pro Max to older models.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mugerwa may have been involved in the purchase and sale of suspected stolen iPhones and spare parts. Police allege that the devices and parts were sourced from individuals operating on the streets of Kampala and surrounding areas.
The other suspects arrested in connection with the case are Mwesigwa Frank and Mutesi Sumaya, alongside Mugabi and Mugerwa.
Police are continuing with investigations to establish the rightful owners of the recovered devices, identify other people who may be involved and dismantle the wider network suspected of dealing in stolen phones.
Members of the public who have recently lost iPhones have been asked to report to Katwe Police Station with proof of ownership to help police identify and recover their devices.
A 27-year-old man in Kakumiro District is behind bars after allegedly staging the death of his own child and using a banana sucker as a fake body in a coffin in an attempt to get Shs350,000 from his family.
The suspect, identified as Nicholas Mutegeki, a resident of Kiyora Village in Bugambe Sub-county, Kikuube District, allegedly cooked up the scheme after his father refused to send him money for funeral expenses.
Police say Mutegeki called his father, Kato Kabaleega, a resident of Kyekaado Cell in Kisiita Town Council, Kakumiro District, on June 15, 2026, claiming that his child had died.
He allegedly asked for Shs350,000 to transport the body to Kakumiro for burial.
After his father declined to provide the money, police say Mutegeki wrapped a banana sucker in cloth, placed it inside a coffin and transported it to his father’s home, pretending it was the child’s body.
The trick was uncovered when mourners demanded to see the body before burial.
According to police, Mutegeki repeatedly refused to open the coffin, raising suspicion among the mourners.
The angry mourners eventually opened the coffin themselves , only to discover a banana sucker wrapped in cloth instead of a body.
Mutegeki allegedly fled immediately after the shocking discovery.
His sister, Irene Mutegeki, said the family and mourners were left in disbelief by the incident.
Albertine Regional Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said police, with the help of residents, launched a manhunt and arrested Mutegeki on Sunday while he was hiding in a nearby bush.
He is currently detained at Kakumiro Central Police Station and has been charged with creating a public nuisance.
Uganda Airlines has signed a deal to acquire eight new Boeing passenger aircraft as it seeks to expand its network and strengthen Entebbe’s position as a regional aviation hub.
The order, announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom, includes four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft for regional and medium-haul operations and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for long-distance flights.
It is the first time Uganda Airlines has placed a direct commercial aircraft order with Boeing, marking the start of a new partnership between the national carrier and the American aircraft manufacturer.
The agreement builds on a framework deal signed earlier at State House, Entebbe, in the presence of President Yoweri Museveni. It was signed by Uganda Airlines Acting Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake and Boeing Vice President for Africa Anbessie Yitbarek.
The partnership also provides for the possible purchase of two cargo aircraft in the future—a Boeing 767-300 Boeing Converted Freighter and a Boeing 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter—as the airline prepares to establish dedicated cargo operations.
Beyond aircraft acquisition, the agreement covers pilot type-rating training, technical assistance, aircraft maintenance development and cooperation with Soroti Flying School to strengthen Uganda’s aviation skills and training capacity.
Wake said the deal would play a key role in the airline’s expansion plans and Uganda’s wider ambition to turn Entebbe into a major aviation hub.
“This commitment with Boeing marks a defining step in Uganda Airlines’ growth journey and in our broader ambition to position Entebbe as a strategic aviation hub for the region,” Wake said.
He added that the new fleet would improve Uganda’s links to regional, African and international markets while supporting tourism, trade, investment and the development of the country’s cargo sector.
The 737-8 MAX aircraft are expected to serve routes across Africa, as well as destinations in the Middle East and India. The larger 787-9 Dreamliners will be used for long-haul services to Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Boeing Senior Vice President for Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen welcomed the agreement, saying the company was ready to support Uganda Airlines as it enters its next phase of growth.
The aircraft manufacturer says the 737-8 MAX and 787-9 use between 20 and 25 per cent less fuel than the aircraft they replace, potentially helping airlines reduce fuel consumption and operating costs.
Wake said the agreement was not simply about buying aircraft but also about building a long-term relationship covering technical expertise, engineering support, training and other areas needed to develop Uganda’s aviation industry.
Uganda Airlines currently operates four Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets and two Airbus A330-800neo wide-body aircraft. The planned Boeing fleet is expected to increase the airline’s passenger capacity, support the opening of new routes and expand its presence in regional and international markets.
The NRM has already scored an early victory in the grassroots race after 30 party candidates in Masaka City secured LC I chairperson positions without facing competition.
The party’s Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko announced the development as she rallied supporters in greater Masaka to turn up in large numbers for the upcoming village and women council elections.
Namayanja said the unopposed victories show the confidence communities have in NRM candidates, who she said will help households tap into Government wealth creation programmes.
She urged voters to take the LC I elections seriously, saying village leaders are the first link between communities and Government services.
According to Namayanja, strong grassroots leadership will help more Ugandans access programmes such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, which are aimed at improving household incomes.
“Village leadership plays a critical role in wealth creation among households to propel the country’s socio-economic transformation,” she said.
She asked voters to choose NRM flagbearers, arguing that they are ready to work with Government to ensure effective service delivery.
Namayanja also warned NRM members against divisions and urged them to remain united behind party candidates as the elections approach.
She called for peaceful participation, reminding supporters to attend NRM Barazas on July 22, Women Council elections on July 23 and LC I elections on July 28.
The party leadership in Masaka City said it will continue mobilisation activities across the country as it prepares for the grassroots elections.

The initiative marks a significant step toward addressing Uganda’s housing deficit by providing structured financing for large-scale property developers and tailored mortgage solutions for individuals and corporate employees.
DTB Uganda will provide developers with reliable, long-term financing to facilitate the construction of quality residential housing, reducing the risk of stalled projects while increasing the supply of affordable homes. In addition, the bank has introduced customized corporate mortgage schemes that enable employers to support their staff in acquiring homes through affordable financing arrangements. The Chief Guest, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, commended DTB Uganda for introducing a mortgage finance solution that aligns with the Government’s agenda of expanding access to affordable housing and increasing home ownership across Uganda.
“Uganda’s rapidly urbanising population presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Expanding access to affordable housing will require stronger collaboration between government, financial institutions and private developers. Initiatives such as DTB’s Mortgage Finance solution will play an important role in mobilising long-term capital, increasing housing supply and helping more Ugandans own decent homes,” she said.
Uganda currently faces a housing deficit estimated at more than 2.4 million units, with annual demand of 210,000 to 300,000 units annually, expected to rise to nearly 3 million units by 2030, driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth. Despite this growing demand, access to mortgage financing remains limited due to high lending costs, short repayment periods and limited long-term financing options, forcing many households to rely on incremental construction over several years.
DTB Uganda’s Mortgage Finance solution seeks to address these challenges by offering structured, longer-tenure financing while partnering with credible developers to expand the supply of quality housing. The initiative is expected to make home ownership more attainable for working Ugandans while supporting sustainable growth within the country’s real estate sector.

By 2050, Africa’s population is projected to grow to 2.5 billion people, which will be close to 25% of the world’s population, which is expected to grow to about 9.5 billion.
Africa will impact every aspect of life in the world, especially trade and industry given that majority of the 54 African states will have transitioned and achieved economic take off.
For economic take off to be achieved, Africa needs to be energy reliant and independent.
This phenomenon is perhaps what has triggered the fierce backlash from a section of neo-colonialists, operating under the guise of climate change activism, to de-campaign major African energy projects.
Slave trade and colonialism kept Africa in the dark for years without offering the continent a tangible path to self-determination. Neo colonialism is the new tool.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic was the biggest eye-opener to less developed countries such as Uganda, when the west selfishly hoarded the vaccines. Africans survived the COVID-19 pandemic through a combination of able leadership, good weather, and a resilient genetic set up augmented by local herbs.
Without shame, the same group that ducked at the hour of need, have resurfaced after fully vaccinating themselves with booster jabs,on a mission to stop Oil and Gas development in Africa, ostensibly to ‘save the African environment and biodiversity’ . Do they love the African lizards more than the people?
Ironically,on 28th September 2022, leaders of Poland, Denmark, and Norway officially launched the Baltic gas pipeline, a 900km conduit intended to supply gas from the Norwegian gas system in the North Sea to Poland, via Denmark sponsored by the European Union (EU) commission.All other pipelines in Europe and the USA are operating, and none has been decommissioned. Equally,new exploration licences are being issued in the Arctic,North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Canada, especially following the Ukraine war. Other countries like Germany have ditched wind farms for coal plants.
What then drives this condescending attitude towards Africa? Besides racism, why would the EU treat energy security as national security matter at the time when the Eu Parliament seeks to undermine a similar objective for East Africa?
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which is a 1,443KM heated 24-inch pipeline that will run from Hoima in Uganda to the port of Tanga in Tanzania, is a critical part of the value chain that includes the upstream projects (Kingfisher and Tilenga), the refinery, and the Liquefied Petroleum Gas projects in Uganda, and a potential reverse gas Pipeline from Tanzania. The EACOP is also a regional pipeline designed to open the DRC and South Sudan markets,which have proven reserves. Mozambique is developing a Gas project worth Us $ 20 billion.An attack on EACOP is,therefore,an attack on the entire oil and Gas industry in East Africa.
All the nine countries in East Africa are net importers of petroleum products, and, therefore, from a strategic perspective, must exploit their resources to ensure energy security. The major sponsors of the anti-development agenda are either beneficiaries of the fossil fuel industry, or major investors in solar and wind technology, but are hiding behind a legitimate climate discussion to achieve their hidden agenda.
There’s no doubt that climate change is real, but the energy transition must be Just for all. Not a transition where the biggest polluters make it an obligation for less developed countries to pay for their sins. Environmental liability dictates that the Polluter pays.
The level of hostility, amount of time and resources invested to ensure Africa remains energy poor are enormous. They have put deliberate and aggressive schemes to recruit from Africa. They are offering visas, air tickets and allowances to the gullible youth to travel to Europe to be paraded holdingpre-written placards, and appear as pawns in scripted documentaries/TV adverts. They are harassing and trolling potential bankers and insurance companies by dumping their numbers online and emails. Most worryingly, they are using lies, and will not listen to any fact that doesn’t fit into their narratives.
But each generation must discover its mission. We must respond and counter these lies, in every fora, baraza, or platform by all lawful means at our disposal. This is our historical mission.
Just like His Excellency Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda described them recently, “some of these people are insufferable, so shallow, egocentric – broadcasting their ignorance all around. They should calm down. We don’t respond lightly to arrogance. The project will go on as planned.
As we gear up for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP27), Africa should stand firm, and strongly come out and let the world know that only a just transition will be accepted as a minimum standard, based on mutual respect if the continent is to alleviate energy poverty, and achieve the desired industrial growth .
