RUKUNGIRI- The National Resistance Movement NRM’s wave in Rukungiri seems to be sweeping away the Forum for Democratic Change party off Rukungiri leadership.
The Wave seemingly did not only end at scooping political positions but also to create divisionism among the home party leadership in the district.
Last week, during the presidential and parliamentary elections, the party that once held majority of the seats in the district managed to scoop a single seat as the National Resistance Movement scooped three.
FDC’s Naboth Namanya managed to overthrow the only NRM MP from Rukungiri District in the 10th Parliament Hon Mary Paula Turyahikayo aka maama Rubabo.
The Rukungiri municipality seat that was under FDC leadership was lost to Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa of the NRM as NRM’s Medius Natukunda Kaharata trounced FDC’s Betty Bamukwatsa Muzanira to become the Woman Member of Parliament.
In Rujumbura County, Hon. Fred Tumuheirwe Turyamuhweza of the FDC lost the seat to the former legislator Hon Jim Katugugu Muhwezi.
The failure wave started way back in August 2020 during the party primaries when the incumbent Rukungiri municipality decided to contest in the race for the third term which other party members termed as contradictory to the party constitution.
Contestants in the party primaries were defeated by Dr Wallen Nuwagaba Rwangondo Tumwine an act that angered the party historical and former mobiliser of the women league Ingrid Turinawe Kamateneti who decided to return as an independent in the general election.
Now the party’s hopes in Rukungiri district remain in the mayoral race where the party flag bearer and Incumbent Charles Makuru is also contesting against Darius Tweyambe whom he defeated in the 2020 August party primaries.
