After 25 years away from the Ugandan stage, legendary Congolese gospel group Makoma are finally set to reconnect with their fans at Kololo Independence Grounds this Friday, and they are coming with more than just nostalgia.
Two members of the celebrated family band touched down in Kampala last night, with others flying in tonight and tomorrow, ahead of what promises to be an emotional and spirit-filled reunion.
During a press conference at New Vision offices, the group opened up about the secret that has kept their music alive and relevant for over two decades.
For many, Makoma’s success may seem like a product of talent, timing, and global appeal. But according to lead singer Nathalie Makoma, their breakthrough was rooted in something far deeper.
“We fasted for 40 days. We prayed and put the album in God’s hands, and He answered,” Nathalie revealed.
The singer explained that at the time, they were not chasing fame or commercial success. Their focus, she said, was purely spiritual.
“We wrote those songs not to be successful or to become celebrities. We were simply singing for God and praying. Those songs are in the Psalms,” she added.
Makoma rose to international prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with gospel hits that blended Congolese rhythms, harmonies, and contemporary sounds.
Their music resonated across Africa and in the diaspora, making them one of the most recognizable gospel exports from Central Africa.
Nathalie recalled that when they were just starting out, some people judged them harshly for their appearance, particularly their piercings and tattoos, branding them as imperfect representatives of gospel music.
However, the group says they remained unfazed.
“It didn’t matter what people thought,” she said. “We obeyed God, followed His footsteps, read the Bible, and prayed. In the end, God blessed us abundantly.”
As anticipation builds for Friday’s show, fans can expect more than a performance; they can expect testimony, gratitude, and a celebration of faith that has carried Makoma through decades of ministry and music.
They will be supported by Rachael K, Best Emily, Sachi Basaki, Brian Lubega, and others.
