Female voices have increasingly reshaped Uganda’s music industry, commanding stages, building powerful brands and inspiring millions. Beyond entertainment, women in music have influenced social attitudes, transformed culture and elevated the status of women in the public sphere.
While the industry was once largely perceived as a male preserve, female artists have steadily broken barriers and claimed their space. By the 1990s and early 2000s, artists such as Joanita Kawalya, Juliana Kanyomozi and later Iryn Namubiru began challenging long-standing perceptions and proving that women could succeed and thrive in the music business.
Today, the rise of social media, digital recording studios and streaming platforms has opened new opportunities for artists to produce and distribute music independently. Female musicians are increasingly using their platforms not only to entertain but also to address social issues such as women’s empowerment, relationships, education and cultural identity.
According to the Atlas Uganda Music Industry Report 2025, women currently make up about 24.1 percent of Uganda’s music industry, compared to 73.8 percent male artists, while 2.1 percent preferred not to disclose their gender. The report also estimates that the music industry contributes about 0.2 percent to Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Globally, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) Global Music Report 2025 indicates that the music industry generated $29.6 billion in trade revenues in 2024, representing a 4.8 percent growth from the previous year.
Subscription streaming remained the major driver of growth, increasing by 9.5 percent, while the number of subscription users rose by 10.6 percent to 752 million globally. Streaming revenues surpassed $20 billion for the first time, reaching $20.4 billion, and accounted for 69 percent of total recorded music revenues worldwide.
Within this growing industry, several Ugandan female artists continue to shape its direction and inspire younger generations.
Sheebah Karungi
Sheebah Karungi, a musician, dancer, actress and entrepreneur, has emerged as one of the most influential female figures in Uganda’s music industry.
The “Ice Cream” hitmaker, who rose from a humble background in Kawempe, has built a successful music career since 2006. Through her music and personal brand, Sheebah has become a symbol of female independence and resilience.
Under Team No Sleep (TNS), she built a powerful brand that challenged male dominance in the entertainment industry and encouraged young women to pursue financial independence.
Her success is reflected in numerous accolades. She has won the HiPipo Music Awards Best Female Artist multiple times between 2015 and 2024, and received the Artist of the Year award in 2017 and 2018.
In 2024, Sheebah was also appointed Vice President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, deputising musician Eddy Kenzo, the federation’s president.
Spice Diana
Hajara Namukwaya, popularly known as Spice Diana, is among the most recognisable voices of Uganda’s contemporary music scene.
A graduate of Makerere University Business School, where she earned a diploma in industrial art, Spice Diana has built a career defined by energetic performances and consistent hit releases.
The “Sili Regular” hitmaker sings in Luganda, English and Swahili, enabling her to reach audiences beyond Uganda and across East Africa.
Her achievements include the Best Female Breakthrough Artist Award at the HiPipo Music Awards in 2015, Best Female Singer at the Zzina Awards in 2017, and Best Collaboration at the Zzina Awards in 2021.
In 2023, she also won the People’s Choice Best Ugandan Sound Single at the East Africa Arts Entertainment Awards for her hit song “Siri Regular.”
Beyond music, Spice Diana has also gained recognition for her philanthropic activities, supporting vulnerable communities and positioning herself as both an entertainer and role model.
Juliana Kanyomozi
Juliana Kanyomozi remains one of Uganda’s most respected female artists and has played a significant role in shaping female artistry in the country since the early 2000s.
The award-winning singer and actress has received numerous accolades throughout her career. In 2008, she became the first female artist to win Artist of the Year at the Pearl of Africa Music Awards.
She has also won the Diva Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, HiPipo Music Awards Best Female Artist, Uganda Entertainment Awards Best Female Artist, and the Zzina Awards Legend of the Year, among others.
Her work has earned nominations at major continental awards including the MTV Africa Music Awards, Kora Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards, and the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Beyond her music career, Kanyomozi has been actively involved in charitable causes supporting orphans, widows and people living with HIV/AIDS, demonstrating how artists can use their influence for social good.
Azawi
Priscilla Zawedde, known professionally as Azawi, represents a new generation of Ugandan artists redefining the country’s contemporary sound. A singer-songwriter and dancer, Azawi transitioned from dance to songwriting before eventually launching a successful recording career. Her music blends Afrobeats with Ugandan influences, while her storytelling often reflects social realities and personal experiences.
Azawi has received several accolades, including Female Artist of the Year, Outstanding Album of the Year – African Music, and Outstanding Afrobeat/Pop Artist at the Buzz Teeniez Awards 2021, as well as Artist of the Year and Teens’ Female Artist of the Year at other youth-focused awards.
Her achievements have strengthened the perception that Ugandan female artists can compete and succeed on the global stage.
Joanita Kawalya
Joanita Kawalya, a founding member of the legendary Afrigo Band, remains one of Uganda’s most respected female vocalists.
She was among the first mainstream female band vocalists in Uganda and helped pave the way for women in live band music.
Kawalya continues to maintain musical excellence, blending traditional Ugandan sounds with contemporary Afro-jazz while adapting to the digital era.
Beyond performing, she has mentored many young female artists and contributed significantly to preserving Uganda’s musical heritage.
From Music to Politics
Some female artists have also ventured beyond entertainment into the political arena, using their popularity to advocate for social change.
Nina Roz
Nina Kankunda, popularly known as Nina Roz, is a recording artist, fashion enthusiast and model known for her Afro-dancehall and Afro-pop music. In the 2026 general elections, she contested for the Sembabule District Woman Member of Parliament seat, though she did not win. Despite the setback, Nina Roz continues to advocate for women’s rights, particularly in areas such as education, health and economic empowerment.
Prossy Nabbosa Mukisa
Actress Prossy Nabbosa Mukisa also ventured into politics after establishing herself in Uganda’s film industry. Known for films such as “Mr Right”, Nabbosa gained national recognition, while her film “Baguma” won Outstanding Film of the Year in 2021.
She later contested for the Mityana District Woman MP seat on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, campaigning on a platform of empowering women and youth.
Although unsuccessful, her journey from a humble background to film and later politics continues to inspire many women to pursue leadership roles.
As Uganda celebrates International Women’s Day, the achievements of these women highlight the growing influence of female artists in shaping culture and public discourse.
From commanding concert stages to advocating for social change, women in music are proving that cultural influence is a powerful force — one capable of transforming industries and inspiring future generations.
