Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka has sparked excitement among fans after his hit song Morocco was heard playing during a training session by English football club Arsenal F.C..
Ahead of their trip to face German side Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal players held their final preparations at the club’s Sobha Realty Training Centre. During light warm-up drills, music blasted through the training ground speakers — and among the tracks played was Baraka’s popular song Morocco.
A video clip capturing the moment quickly spread across social media, thrilling Ugandan fans who were excited to hear a local artist’s music playing at one of the world’s biggest football clubs. For many, the moment symbolised the growing international reach of Uganda’s music industry.
Among those who reacted was Hon Joseph Ssewungu, the Member of Parliament for Kalungu County West and a known Arsenal supporter. While celebrating the milestone, Ssewungu also used the opportunity to take a swipe at veteran musician Bebe Cool.
Commenting on the viral video, the legislator suggested that some artists might try to claim credit for Baraka’s growing success.
“Then there is one @BebeCoolUG whose music stops here. He will come out and claim ‘mbu’ he gave Joshua Baraka the stepping stone and will say he is on the same level with Mr. President,” Ssewungu wrote.
His remarks quickly drew attention online, with many social media users interpreting the comment as a sarcastic jab at Bebe Cool, who has often spoken about his role in mentoring younger artists in Uganda’s music industry.
The viral clip and the subsequent reactions have further amplified attention around Baraka’s music, with fans celebrating the rare moment of Ugandan sound reaching an international football stage.
