As Ugandan music continues to evolve, a familiar debate has resurfaced—how to celebrate rising stars without diminishing the legacy of established artists.
Members of B2C Boys have now weighed in, cautioning against comparisons between fast-rising singer Joshua Baraka and industry heavyweight Eddy Kenzo.
Speaking out, Delivad Julio described the comparisons as “unfair,” arguing that they ignore the realities of time, experience and industry evolution.
Baraka’s growing international visibility has sparked conversations placing him alongside Kenzo—particularly because of milestones that mirror the latter’s earlier breakthrough years. But Julio believes such parallels risk oversimplifying two very different journeys.
For him, the issue is not about talent, but context.
Kenzo’s career spans close to two decades, marked by sustained relevance, global recognition and influence on Uganda’s music export story. Comparing that trajectory to an artist still within his first few years, Julio argues, creates unrealistic expectations and unnecessary pressure.
Mr Lee aslo a member of the B2C echoed this view, striking a more balanced tone.
“Baraka might even surpass Eddy, but let’s not discredit or compare them,” he said. “Eddy has done a lot, and that’s a fact. Let’s celebrate both for what they bring.”
The debate reflects a broader tension within the industry—how to measure success in an era where digital platforms accelerate visibility and compress timelines.
Unlike previous generations, today’s artists can achieve international reach much faster. However, longevity—the ability to remain relevant over time—remains a different benchmark altogether.
B2C also pointed out that established artists like Jose Chameleone are rarely subjected to similar comparisons, raising questions about how legacy is recognised and protected.
At its core, the discussion highlights a shifting industry—one where new talent is rising quickly, but where the foundations laid by earlier artists still shape the path.
For Julio, the solution is simple: appreciation over comparison.
