Have We Confused Attention With Love?

Attention feels a lot like love in the beginning.

Good morning texts. Constant calls. Compliments. Likes. Reposts. Flowers. Public declarations. Someone wanting to know where you are and what you are doing.

Being noticed feels good.

But attention and love are not necessarily the same thing.

Attention is often strongest when things are exciting. Love, however, becomes easier to identify when they are not.

Love is the hospital visit. It is the uncomfortable conversation and the patience required when somebody is not entertaining. More importantly, it is the decision to show up when there is nothing to post about afterwards.

Attention asks, “How do you make me feel?”

Love eventually has to ask, “What do you need from me?”

When Attention Is Not Enough

This distinction matters beyond romance.

Some friendships thrive around parties but disappear during difficult seasons. Some people celebrate your success loudly but cannot sit quietly beside your disappointment. Likewise, some relationships have incredible online chemistry and almost no emotional substance offline.

None of this makes attention bad.

We need it. People deserve compliments, affection and reassurance. Sometimes, giving someone your undivided attention is itself an act of love.

The mistake, however, is treating attention as proof.

Anybody can be fascinated by you temporarily.

The more important question is who remains interested in your wellbeing after the fascination settles.

Love is not always louder.

Sometimes, it is simply the person who keeps showing up after there is no audience left to impress.
