Sasha Vybz urges artists to wake up to copyright reality – Sqoop

In an industry where talent often moves faster than knowledge, Sasha Vybz is calling for many creatives to avoid costly mistakes.

Speaking on the ongoing conversation around copyright law, the video director didn’t just point fingers at institutions or enforcement bodies. Instead, he turned the spotlight inward, challenging fellow creatives to take responsibility for their own understanding of the law.

“First of all, creatives, including artists, have to be educated on what this law is,” he said. “Once they understand it, they get themselves organized.”

It’s a simple message, but one rooted in a deeper frustration. For years, many artists have found themselves on the losing end of deals, disputes, and missed earnings, not necessarily because the system failed them, but because they didn’t fully understand how it works.

Sasha Vybz believes that knowledge is the first line of defense.

When artists begin to grasp what copyright truly means—ownership, control, and the right to earn from their work, they start moving differently. They become more intentional, more cautious, and ultimately more empowered.

“It’s about getting an understanding of what copyright law means,” he added. “When that happens, then you start avoiding some of these setbacks that we are facing.”
