While Lugogo Cricket Oval remains a dream destination for many Ugandan musicians, Geosteady Blackman says he would rather stay away from the pressure that comes with staging a show at the massive venue.
The singer has dismissed the idea of holding a concert at Lugogo, admitting that the thought of facing such a large crowd actually scares him.
For years, Lugogo has been more than just a concert venue. Successfully filling the oval has often been regarded as a statement of an artist’s popularity, with musicians who draw huge crowds earning recognition among the country’s biggest stars.
Geosteady, however, is not interested in measuring his success by that standard.
Speaking in a recent interview, the singer said Lugogo has never been part of his plans and insisted that he has no desire to test himself at the venue.
“I cannot handle this venue. As a person, I have my own principles in me and truthfully, I’m scared of Lugogo,” Geosteady said in an interview with Rewind, Galaxy TV.
He explained that artists usually pursue such major concerts because they have long imagined themselves performing before massive crowds. In his case, however, Lugogo has never been an ambition.
“For one to do something, they must have dreamed about it or wished for it, but I have never thought about that. It has never come to my mind. I do not have it and I will never do it,” he added.
Part of Geosteady’s hesitation may also come down to the nature of his music. The singer has built much of his career around romantic songs and emotional ballads, a style that tends to thrive in settings where audiences can connect more closely with the performer.
Rather than risk facing an enormous venue and the possibility of a sparse crowd, Geosteady appears to prefer spaces where his music can create a more intimate connection with fans.
