Karole Kasita calls for unity against single motherhood

Singer and performer Karole Kasita has called on women to unite and speak with one voice in the fight against single motherhood, while urging men to take greater responsibility for their children.

The ‘Balance’ hitmaker made the remarks while speaking at Beauty Beyond Scars, an event organised by socialite Bad Black, where she also addressed the role of men in homes amid the growing conversations around feminism and women’s empowerment.

Kasita reminded men that feminism was never about abandoning their responsibilities at home or leaving women to handle everything on their own.

Men, I’m just reminding you, when we said feminism, we meant equality and handling things together. We didn’t mean that you leave the rest of the things to us. A single mother didn’t mean that. Please, men, feminism didn’t mean that you completely leave the rest of things to be handled by women alone. We’re pleading to you.

She also appealed to fellow women to unite and push for stronger systems aimed at reducing the burden of single parenthood.

I also want to ask my fellow ladies, can we speak as one to enforce bodies that fight single motherhood? Single motherhood is not right. Let’s fight it, guys.

Kasita further called upon fathers to provide for their children regardless of their financial circumstances, arguing that parents should not abandon their responsibilities simply because they have limited resources.

Every man out there who has children, please look after your children with the little you have. I appeal to the government that we start the child support system. We stage a protest walk around Parliament.

Her call was backed by fellow single mothers Sheilah Price and Nalongo Lewis, who also shared their frustrations over the challenges women face when fathers fail to provide for their children.

Sheilah Price made an emotional appeal for stronger enforcement of child-support obligations, even calling on government authorities to take action against men who allegedly abandon their parental responsibilities.

Men should start to give women child support. Mr. CDF, as the way you arrest the rest, we request you arrest men who give birth and don’t support their children. We suffer a lot. NGOs have not done enough to help us.
