A police officer has died by suicide after shooting and injuring a woman and a private security guard at Freedom City along Entebbe Road.
The dramatic incident involved PPC Ayijuka Saul, who Police believe had previously been in a relationship with the female victim.
Police say the officer shot 23-year-old Akankunda Florence in the thigh. A private security guard was also caught in the shooting and sustained injuries.
The two victims were rushed to hospital for treatment. After shooting the pair, Ayijuka turned the gun on himself and died instantly.
Police rushed to the scene, secured the area and began collecting evidence. An AK-47 rifle, ammunition and cartridges were recovered and taken as exhibits.
The officer’s body was later taken to Mulago Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the motive and the events leading to the shooting are still being investigated.
Police are now working to establish what exactly happened between the officer and the woman and what led to the shooting at the busy shopping centre.
