Susan Makula has responded to the backlash she received after advising women against considering relationships with men who are still renting.
Makula made the remarks while attending the Beauty Beyond The Scars event, where she encouraged women to be careful about the kind of relationships they enter. Her comments caused criticism from some social media users, with many arguing that renting should not determine whether someone is ready for marriage.
Responding to the criticism, Makula said she does not regret her message, explaining that her comments were misunderstood.
“I don’t care,” she said, adding that her intention was not to attack men who rent or suggest that it is wrong to marry someone who does not yet own a home.
Those who want to understand and will also have girl children, I also started in a rental and now have tenants, with friends who still rent as well. It is absolutely okay to marry someone when you are still renting and work hard and leave it.
However, Makula said she was particularly concerned about situations where men get women pregnant and leave them without proper support or a stable home.
What’s not right is to bring someone’s daughter and leave them there. Men making women pregnant and leaving them has been normalised, and it’s wrong.
Makula further clarified that her message was directed at women who receive keys to a man’s rented house and immediately consider that proof that they have entered a secure marriage.
According to her, having access to a rented home should not automatically be viewed as a conclusive sign of long-term stability, which is why she encouraged women to consider whether a man has built a home of his own.
She also pointed out that she encouraged women at the event to work and become financially independent.
I also advised girls to work and even gave Shs 500,000 on that day. One woman received Shs 200,000 and another Shs 300,000, but many can’t even work because they are getting pregnant for men who don’t even have a home.
