Over 113,000 Students Qualify for University as 2025 UACE Results Released
More than 113,000 students who sat the 2025 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations have qualified for university admission, with an impressive 98.9% pass rate recorded — a notable jump from the 65.5% recorded in 2024.
The results, released by First Lady and Minister of Education Janet Museveni at State House Nakasero in Kampala on Friday, show that 113,291 candidates — representing 68.6% of the 165,172 who sat the exams — obtained the required two principal passes for university entry. When Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are factored in, at least 145,129 candidates, or 87.9% of all who sat, qualify for some form of post-secondary education.

Science subjects bounce back
Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) executive director Dan Odongo highlighted a strong recovery in science subject performance, noting significant improvements in mathematics, chemistry, biology, agriculture, geography and economics. Mathematics entries rose sharply from 58,495 candidates in 2024 to 70,132 in 2025, while biology entries grew from 24,853 to 35,660.
The proportion of candidates scoring “A” in mathematics jumped from 3.6% to 12.9%, and biology from 1.1% to 5.9% — encouraging signs for Uganda’s STEM pipeline.
“Although enrolment in STEM subjects shows a gradual upward trend, deliberate multi-sectoral interventions will be required to achieve national targets in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Odongo said.
Girls outperform expectations
Despite accounting for only 43.7% of all candidates (72,764 compared to 92,798 males), female students punched above their weight. Some 72.8% of female candidates obtained at least two principal passes, compared to 65.3% of males. The percentage of passes at the upper levels — three and two principal passes — was also higher among females.
However, science subjects remain a stubborn gender gap, with physics recording the lowest female candidature of all subjects.
Vocational and arts subjects declining
Not all the news was positive. Entrepreneurship education, Christian religious education, fine art, history, and humanities subjects recorded noticeable declines in both candidature and performance. Entrepreneurship saw one of the sharpest drops, falling from 55,909 candidates in 2024 to just 30,245 in 2025, with its pass rate dropping from 65.2% to 49.5%.
UNEB also raised concern about students’ ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations, noting that practical exposure remains a major challenge — particularly in the sciences.
Malpractice and withheld results
Examination malpractice remained relatively low, with 351 cases — just 0.2% of candidates — reported from 47 centres. The cases mainly involved possession of unauthorised materials and receiving assistance during practicals. Results for those candidates will be withheld pending investigations under the UNEB Act.
Additionally, 70 candidates from Uganda Government Upper Prison, Luzira sat the exams — up from 49 in 2024 — with 68 of them actually writing the examinations.

Early morning, my alarm blares. Oops! It’s yet another day of scraping by on a shoestring budget. Living on your own terms has its allure: no curfews, no rules, and the freedom to indulge in the weirdest food combinations imaginable. But more often than not, it’s katogo and cabbage on the menu, rather than the chicken I dream of, and that’s on a lucky day. With nothing for breakfast, I get dressed in a jiffy and rush to class, hoping to make it through another day. By the way, government students are the best timekeepers you’ll ever meet. We always know the exact date and day of the week, down to the minute. You’d think we were auditioning for a calendar commercial. And why? Because of that mythical thing called a “living out allowance”, the puppet master of every government student’s life.
It’s interesting that university has no break time. Or I would rather say, it is never part of my schedule. Its lunch time! Noodles and spaghetti are staples, yesterday, today and tomorrow. Regardless, I dream big. “Sneakers aren’t enough; I need boots.” “I’m dropping android for iPhone.” Meanwhile, the allowance stares back sceptically, whispering, “Really? Thats your plan?” Undeterred I respond, “Yes, I’m gonna show you fire!” I wouldn’t want to call it the Parousia but waiting for money feels like an endless vigil. patience gives way to prayer, then to calls home, only to be met with stories of borrowed hope. “We’ve been waiting for your allowance, too. Your little brother isn’t well,” they explain. Each day, hope wanes, and borrowing shifts from a dirty word to a lifestyle.

In the end, the allowance that was supposed to fund my grand dreams ends up settling debts and buying one or two good meals. It’s amusing how friends on private think we are rich.

Uganda, Tanzania agree to harmonise border rules and ID cards
Uganda and Tanzania have agreed to scrap all remaining trade barriers to address a massive 9 trillion shilling imbalance between the two neighbours.
The decision was made during the fifth session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Friday in Dar es Salaam. Both countries said they want to move away from diplomatic formalities and focus on the technical removal of bottlenecks affecting essential goods.
The move follows trade figures from 2025 showing a significant gap, with Tanzania exporting 10 trillion shillings worth of goods to Uganda, while receiving only 1.1 trillion shillings in return. Negotiators are now working to resolve disputes over import charges on sugar, milk, steel and electric poles.
Beyond trade, there are plans to harmonise the use of national identity cards to allow workers to move more freely across the border.
The meeting also reviewed major regional projects, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). A joint communique was signed by Uganda minister of state for foreign affairs John Mulimba and Tanzania foreign minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, reaffirming their commitment to closer economic integration.
The time for action is now, Mulimba said, describing the session as a shift from political vision to economic execution. He added that people expect to see real outcomes.
While defense and regional integration remain important, Mulimba noted that these were secondary to the immediate need for seamless commerce. Kombo added that the discussions covered a wide range of areas including health, education and immigration.
Energy remains a priority for both nations. Vincent Waiswa Bagiire, permanent secretary for Uganda’s foreign ministry, said the 18.7 trillion shilling EACOP project is now 79 percent complete. Technical teams have been told to resolve border issues ahead of an export target of October 2026.
The two countries are also planning a natural gas pipeline from Tanzania to Uganda and a petroleum products pipeline to the port of Tanga.
Transport links are also being upgraded. The countries have formalised a framework for the Isaka-Lusahunga-Murongo Standard Gauge Railway. On Lake Victoria, the commissioning of the MV New Mwanza, the largest freshwater vessel in Africa, is expected to cut travel times and costs.
Other projects highlighted include the 24-hour operation of the Mutukula border post and the 14-megawatt Kikagati-Murongo hydropower plant.
Uganda is set to host the next session of the commission in 2028.

Yoga Yoga Jajja: Ugandans gather at Kololo to celebrate President Museveni’s election victory
Thousands of Ugandans today gathered at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the “Yoga Yoga Jajja” event to celebrate President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s recent election victory.
President Museveni was re-elected in January during the 2026 general election. He secured 7,946,772 votes, representing 71.65% of the valid ballots cast, according to the Independent Electoral Commission.
The full-day event, organised by Ms. Aminah Mukalazi, the Head of the State House Local Content Unit, attracted large crowds who turned up to express gratitude and support for the President, in what organizers described as both a thanksgiving and a celebration of national unity.
During the event, the President who was accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, thanked supporters and renewed his call for wealth creation, accountability, and national unity.
President Museveni also expressed gratitude to the organizers, particularly Ms. Mukalazi, who spearheaded the celebrations.
“I greet you all. I want to thank our daughter Aminah Mukalazi for organizing these celebrations, and I thank all the groups that participated in the campaign. I also thank all Ugandans who are not here but supported the NRM,” the President said.
He also thanked God for what he described as decades of victories throughout Uganda’s struggles.
“I want to thank God for the victory and the many victories He has been giving us. For the last 55 years, since 1971, we have been in struggles, and God has always given us victories,” he noted.

“You have heard of our sister Aminah Mukalazi. She is celebrating the political victory, but she is also reminding everybody to work and create wealth in their homes,” he said.
President Museveni emphasized that Uganda’s transformation depends on wealth and job creation, particularly in key sectors of the economy.
“The issue of wealth and job creation is very important. It should be done in sectors such as commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services and ICT. Every adult in Uganda should ensure that he or she is engaged in productive work,” he said.
The President noted that poverty in some households is one of the reasons some young people end up on the streets.
“You heard the young man who said he once stayed on the streets. That problem comes from homes that lack the capacity to support their children. That is why since 1995 we have been encouraging wealth creation under the message of ‘Bonna Bagagawale,’ so that every household can prosper,” he explained.
He pointed to government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model as key tools for moving more Ugandans from subsistence living into the money economy.
“About 70% of Ugandans are now in the money economy, but there are still about 30 percent remaining. That is why programs like the Parish Development Model are important,” the President said.
He urged citizens to closely monitor government programs in their communities to ensure that funds benefit the intended beneficiaries.
“All of you belong to a parish and in towns it is called a ward. Elect committees and follow up on the Parish Development Model money so that you know who has received it and how it is being used,” he advised.
On national budgeting, President Museveni called on Ugandans to encourage their Members of Parliament to support government priorities that focus on improving livelihoods.
“Tell your Members of Parliament to support my budgeting where we prioritize the livelihoods of our people. If you want money, we must start with wealth creation programs like PDM before other expenditures,” he said.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to free education in public schools.
“We want our children to study free of charge in government schools, but we must first fight poverty so that families can support their children,” he added.
The President also raised concern about drug theft in some health facilities and urged communities to demand accountability.
“Immunization has gone very well, but the problem in some health centers is treatment. These health centers are here in Uganda not in Congo or South Sudan. If there is theft of drugs, the people must demand answers,” he said.
President Museveni warned against corruption, particularly individuals who allegedly sell government jobs.
“Do not tolerate corruption. We hear about people selling government jobs. Why don’t you report them so they are arrested? Many government workers are honest, but the few corrupt ones must be exposed,” he said.
The President further noted that improving roads remains a priority for the government.
“The next struggle is to ensure that our roads are in good condition. There are issues which I know about, and we shall solve them,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of promoting local content in national projects to create opportunities for Ugandan businesses.
“Local content means that if something can be done by Ugandans, they must be given priority. For example, the Standard Gauge Railway will need materials such as cement sleepers, and these can be produced locally,” he said.
President Museveni assured investors that Uganda remains open for business but warned that corruption will not be tolerated.
“Investors come with their own money, but what they do not want is corruption. When I get information about corruption, we deal with those responsible,” he said.
On her part, the Vice President, H.E Jessica Alupo congratulated the President on his victory and thanked Ugandans for supporting peace and development.
“Your Excellency, thank you for steering the campaign teams with excellence, which enabled us to secure a victory that was not contested. I thank the people of Uganda for supporting peace, security and development,” she said.
