  • From fan in the crowd to headliner: Etania’s rise to owning the stage at Lugogo

From fan in the crowd to headliner: Etania’s rise to owning the stage at Lugogo

Before the milestones, there are always decisive moments in a career and for Etania, the moment came not in a studio or a boardroom, but in the middle of a heavy crowd, pressed against a concert barrier. She was just another face in that sea of people. Until she wasn’t. That teary-eyed leap onto Wizkid’s stage was her first declaration that I belong here.

That hunger to move from the edge of the crowd to its very centre is what propelled her into the DJ booth as she traded fan-girl euphoria for the discipline it took to control the energy that had once controlled her.

Today, as she prepares to make history as the first female DJs to headline a major Ugandan event, Etania knows that no star rises alone. She now stands with a village of family, friends, mentors and a brand whose support has seen her through some of the most defining moments of her climb.

Behind the scenes, the atmosphere has a fire of equal doses of play and perfectionism. In an intimate rehearsal studio in town, Etania runs through her set with her chief choreographers, Mayani, Zaq, Cohen Guru & Evans Vivo a team she’s enlisted of seasoned dancers, to translate her raw stage presence into choreography that feels both tight and effortlessly free.

“The Fiesta was one of the first stages I’ve ever played while I tested my sound and grew my confidence to connect with an audience.” She added, “That stage became like a proving ground that if I can do it here, I can do it anywhere.” Now, her choreographers direct her squad of backup dancers who have been drilling transitions for weeks and still finetuning them as they did following the Fiesta in Nkozi a couple of weeks ago.

As for the craft behind the decks. While Etania is known as a natural on the mic, her DJ journey required more deliberate effort. She credits a circle of Kampala’s mix masters including the collective at Ssese Nation who let her shadow them in cramped booths, teaching her to read a crowd’s pulse before she ever touched a Pioneer DJ deck.

“I didn’t want to just press play,” she says. “I wanted to earn the right to be in control of the crowd.” Today, those same mentors still sit in on her prep sessions, offering quiet nods or sharp critiques as she refines the setlist that will define her debut headliner.

Yet, even the brightest stars need a place to dim the lights and recharge. When the pressure of headlining a national stage feels heavy, Etania finds her equilibrium in a tight-knit inner circle.

At the heart of this is her relationship with Joshua Baraka. As East Africa’s hottest musical commodity, her “daddy bear” understands the weight of the spotlight better than anyone. Together, they navigate the whirlwind of fame by keeping each other grounded to tune out the noise of the industry. It is a partnership built on fun and mutual respect for the craft, reminding Etania that while she becomes a brand powerhouse, she is also a woman supported by love.

Yet the strongest anchor remains her family. Her mother, who initially worried about a life spent in the nightlife economy, now occasionally sews custom patches onto Etania’s performance jackets and is often the voice on the other end of the line that remind her of her “Why”. Her younger siblings have become her harshest focus group, unafraid to tell her when a transition sounds “mid.”

So whenever Etania takes a stage, it’s never really as a solo act. It’s with the presence of a community that rehearsed, believed, and showed up to turn her into a cultural icon for a generation that shows up boldly and refuses to play small.

She represents every dreamer who refused to fade into the background and who through sheer force of will and a team committed to supporting her flavor, has now become the Life of the Party. Whether you are a doubter or a believer of this, you are in for a show on 4th April at Lugogo Hockey Grounds for her milestone moment.

  • NLGRB Partners with Online Media Publishers to Promote Responsible Gaming

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) is partnering with the Online Media Publishers Association Uganda (OMPA-U) to promote responsible gaming and reduce gambling-related harm, especially among young people.

The push follows a stakeholder engagement held earlier on Tuesday, where the regulator and online publishers agreed to strengthen collaboration and amplify awareness of the Board’s mandate.

The meeting underscored that gaming in Uganda spans both land-based and online platforms, calling for coordinated messaging to reach audiences across all channels.

“We are strengthening our partnership with OMPA to not only drive positive mindset change but also to collaboratively shape and enhance policies that support responsible gaming across all platforms,” said Adrine Otunga, Manager Legal at NLGRB.

The move reflects a broader shift by the regulator toward prevention and behavioural change, as betting activity — largely driven by mobile money and internet access — continues to expand.

NLGRB spokesperson Jackie Kamakune said the Board is increasingly concerned about the social impact of gambling, particularly among young people.

“The growth has been rapid and largely digital, which makes access easier but also increases vulnerability,” Kamakune said. “This partnership is about strengthening awareness and ensuring Ugandans are protected through responsible gaming.”

Online betting now accounts for 93% of gaming activity in Uganda, while a 2025 GeoPoll survey shows that 87% of Ugandans have placed bets and 57% of youth actively engage in gambling.

“We are seeing growing cases of problem gambling, especially among the youth,” Kamakune added. “Enforcement alone is not enough — we need sustained public education to promote safer choices.”

OMPA-U, which brings together 31 online media platforms with a combined reach of more than 12 million Ugandans, is expected to play a central role in delivering the campaign.

Speaking at the engagement, Giles Muhame, President of OMPA-U, said the association is ready to support the regulator through innovative data-driven content.

He emphasised the need to correct misconceptions around gambling, particularly the belief that betting can serve as a source of income.

“Gaming must be understood as entertainment, not employment,” he said. “If we don’t change that mindset, we risk normalising financial harm, especially among young people.”

Data presented at the engagement shows that betting turnover has grown sharply, rising from about Shs500 billion ($139.5 million) in the 2021/22 financial year to nearly Shs8 trillion ($2.23 billion) by the end of 2024/25.

While the sector employs more than 10,000 people and contributes to government revenue, officials warned that the social costs — including addiction, debt and mental health challenges — are also increasing.

Kamakune said the Board will continue enforcement against illegal operators, but stressed that partnerships with media are critical to shaping public attitudes.

“Responsible gaming is a shared responsibility,” she said. “By working together, we can build a well-informed gaming environment that protects Ugandans while supporting a regulated industry.”

  • April fool’s or fatherhood? Ykee Benda keeps fans guessing – Sqoop

April fool’s or fatherhood? Ykee Benda keeps fans guessing – Sqoop

Ugandan singer Ykee Benda sent social media into a whirlwind of excitement and confusion after sharing a cryptic message that many initially took as life changing news.

“What do they call a father to triplets? Yap that’s what man dem is gonna be calling me. What a way to begin a day,” he posted.

    The reaction was instant.

Fans flooded his comment section with congratulatory messages, celebrating what seemed like a major personal milestone. For a brief moment, it felt like the artist had just revealed he was expecting triplets, with followers applauding him and sharing in the excitement.

    But then came the pause.

As the day unfolded, more observant fans began to question the timing. The post had gone up on April 1, a date widely known for pranks and playful misdirection. Suddenly, what looked like a heartfelt announcement started to feel like a well-crafted joke.

The uncertainty only amplified the buzz. Some fans stuck to their congratulatory messages, choosing to take the post at face value, while others laughed it off as a classic April fool’s stunt, praising the singer for pulling it off so convincingly.

In true showman fashion, Ykee Benda did not immediately clarify the intent, letting the speculation build and the conversation grow. The ambiguity kept timelines active, with fans debating, reacting and sharing the post across platforms.

Whether it was a genuine hint at big personal news or simply a playful nod to April Fool’s Day, one thing is certain: Ykee Benda knew exactly how to capture attention.

And for a moment, he had everyone believing, questioning and talking all at once.

  • Sasha Vybz urges artists to wake up to copyright reality – Sqoop

Sasha Vybz urges artists to wake up to copyright reality – Sqoop

In an industry where talent often moves faster than knowledge, Sasha Vybz is calling for many creatives to avoid costly mistakes.

Speaking on the ongoing conversation around copyright law, the video director didn’t just point fingers at institutions or enforcement bodies. Instead, he turned the spotlight inward, challenging fellow creatives to take responsibility for their own understanding of the law.

“First of all, creatives, including artists, have to be educated on what this law is,” he said. “Once they understand it, they get themselves organized.”

It’s a simple message, but one rooted in a deeper frustration. For years, many artists have found themselves on the losing end of deals, disputes, and missed earnings, not necessarily because the system failed them, but because they didn’t fully understand how it works.

Sasha Vybz believes that knowledge is the first line of defense.

When artists begin to grasp what copyright truly means—ownership, control, and the right to earn from their work, they start moving differently. They become more intentional, more cautious, and ultimately more empowered.

“It’s about getting an understanding of what copyright law means,” he added. “When that happens, then you start avoiding some of these setbacks that we are facing.”

  • Laika Drops ‘Pizza Ewola’ as Album Nears Release

Laika Drops ‘Pizza Ewola’ as Album Nears Release

Fans who have been wondering about Laika can finally breathe easy, as the singer has resurfaced with fresh updates and new music on the way.

During a chat on NRG Radio, Laika revealed that her time away has been anything but quiet, spending it fully focused on creating new material.

The break also allowed her to work on an album that is now nearing completion.

I was working on an album, and I am still working on it. I am about to release it.

As fans wait for the full project, Laika has already dropped a new track titled ‘Pizza Ewola,’ loosely meaning the pizza is getting cold.

She described the song as one of her strongest releases so far and praised its production.

My current song is very nice and well-produced, done by Banger Boi. It is actually topping most of my songs.

She added that the title carries an open meaning, leaving fans free to interpret it in their own way.

It is self-explanatory. I think I just sang the name “Pizza Ewoola,” so how you use that information is up to you. If you take it as pizza for eating, it is okay.

With new music out and an album on the horizon, Laika appears ready to step back into the spotlight.

  • Mubarak Munyagwa slams Gloria Bugie over ‘inappropriate’ school performance, calls for legal action

Mubarak Munyagwa slams Gloria Bugie over ‘inappropriate’ school performance, calls for legal action

Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Gloria Bugie following her recent performance at Namilyango College, urging her to conduct herself more decently around students.

Gloria Bugie had been invited to perform at the school, but photos and videos that later surfaced online showed her engaging in dance moves, particularly bending over toward students, that many critics described as inappropriate, especially given that the audience consisted largely of minors.

Reacting to the incident, he did not hold back, labeling the act as unacceptable and harmful.

“What she did is clearly child molestation,” he said, adding that some individuals in the music industry lack self-respect and instead follow questionable trends without considering their impact.

He went further to call for legal action against the singer, insisting that her conduct crossed a line.

According to him, there is a need to promote artists whose content and performances are suitable for younger audiences, rather than exposing students to adult-themed entertainment.

Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa also criticised the nature of her stage appearance, stressing that performers invited to schools should maintain a level of decency.

Gloria Bugie should have performed in a decent attire. She can literally give birth to some of those children.

He concluded by suggesting that both Gloria Bugie and the school’s head teacher should be held accountable for allowing such a performance to take place.

  • Copyright Law Means Little Without Sensitization — Sasha Vybz

Copyright Law Means Little Without Sensitization — Sasha Vybz

Ugandan creatives have welcomed the passing of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Amendment Bill, 2025, in Parliament, but Sasha Vybz says the real work is only just beginning.

Speaking during a discussion on UBC TV, the multi-award-winning Ugandan music video director and cinematographer, whose real name is Ian Akankwasa, stressed the need for a proper understanding of the new law.

He warned that many creatives risk missing out if they do not fully understand what the law means and how it protects their work.

For him, education must come first before anything else.

First thing is education. We have to first of all, creatives and artistes, they have to be educated on what this law means. Now, once they understand that, they get themselves organised, get an understanding of what it means by copyright law. So, that is also very important that it happens. Once that happens, then you can start avoiding some of these setbacks that we are facing.

His remarks come at a time when many in the industry have started celebrating the bill as a major win for creatives across the country.

Parliament passed the bill on March 17, and it now awaits assent from the President before it becomes law.
