The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brig. Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the Acting Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), replacing Maj. Gen. David Mugisha, who is preparing to leave for strategic military studies abroad.

As part of the changes, Brig. Gen. Nyakikuru has been elevated to the acting rank of Major General with immediate effect. Maj. Gen. Mugisha is expected to depart in the coming months to attend the National Defence College (NDC) course abroad. According to the UPDF Acting Spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi, Gen. Muhoozi commended Maj. Gen. Mugisha for his “outstanding tour of duty as SFC Commander” and wished him success in his strategic security studies. He also congratulated Acting Maj. Gen. Nyakikuru on both his appointment and promotion.

The latest appointment comes barely two days after the Special Forces Command implemented a wide-ranging reshuffle across its formations and directorates as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen leadership and prepare senior officers for higher responsibilities through professional military education. On Friday, Brig. Gen. John Mango Baraza was appointed Chief of Staff of the SFC, replacing Brig. Gen. Paul Wanyera Namawa, who will attend the National Defence College in Uganda.

The handover was presided over by Acting Maj. Gen. Nyakikuru, who urged officers taking up new assignments to embrace teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to service. The reshuffle also saw appointments to several key positions, including Director of Political Commissariat, Commander of the 16 Service Brigade, Commander of the 2 Protective Agents Brigade, Commandant of the VVIP Training School at Sera Kasenyi, Commanding Officer of the 6 Infantry Battalion, and Commandant of Fort Samora Machel Training School.

Other postings include Deputy Director of Operations, Commander of the 804 Motorised Infantry Brigade, Director of Personnel Policy, Commanding Officer of the 2 Infantry Battalion, an administrative appointment in the Directorate of Operations, and SFC Public Information Officer. Major Jimmy Omara was also selected to attend a one-year course at the Kimaka Senior Command and Staff College and will be replaced by Captain Julius Kabandize.

According to the UPDF, the changes are part of routine efforts to develop officers through professional military education in preparation for higher leadership responsibilities. Maj. Gen. Mugisha has commanded the Special Forces Command since 2022, when he succeeded Brig. Gen. Felix Busizoori, who now serves as Deputy Commander of the UPDF’s 3rd Infantry Division based in Moroto.

The Special Forces Command is responsible for the security of President Yoweri Museveni and the First Family. Previous commanders of the elite unit include Maj. Gen. Don Nabasa, Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeeyi Magyenyi, and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also previously served as Commander of the Land Forces.

LIRA: A full-blown power war has erupted at Lira University, forcing the Office of the Attorney General to dispatch a high-powered delegation from Kampala as bitter infighting between the University’s top leaders threatens to spiral out of control.

On Monday, August 3, 2026, a team from the Office of the Attorney General led by Deputy Solicitor General Charles Ouma held a high-level meeting with the University’s Top Management Committee to deliberate on what officials described as “pertinent university issues.”

The Lira University delegation was led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jasper Ogwal Okeng and included University Council Chairperson David Geoffrey Opiokello, Appointments Board Chairperson Onyik Bosco and other senior university officials. The closed-door meeting took place at the Education Block Medical Library.

The intervention comes as a bitter leadership feud between the Vice Chancellor and the University Council bursts into the open through explosive letters exposing a fierce struggle over who is really in charge of the institution.

The drama began after the University Council, in a letter dated July 27, 2026, demanded that Prof. Ogwal-Okeng explain a string of administrative decisions he made after resuming duty from sick leave on July 13.

Council questioned why the Vice Chancellor had returned to office earlier than expected, whether his sick leave had been lawful, whether he had obtained medical clearance before resuming work and why he allegedly reversed several Council resolutions that had been made during his absence.

Among the controversial decisions was the status of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), who had been assigned to perform the functions of the Vice Chancellor while Prof. Ogwal-Okeng was away.

But instead of backing down, the Vice Chancellor fired back with an explosive response dated July 31, accusing Council Chairperson David Geoffrey Opiokello of repeatedly interfering in the day-to-day management of the university and acting outside the law.

Prof. Ogwal-Okeng reminded the Council chairperson that under Section 31(1)(i) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, the Vice Chancellor is the University’s chief academic, administrative and financial officer, with exclusive responsibility for running the institution’s daily affairs.

He accused Opiokello of bypassing the Office of the Vice Chancellor by issuing operational directives directly to university staff and exceeding the powers legally granted to him.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the Council Chairperson’s role is limited to presiding over Council meetings and consulting the Vice Chancellor in accordance with the law, not running the University’s daily operations.

Prof. Ogwal-Okeng directed that all future operational and administrative communication be routed through the Office of the Vice Chancellor and insisted that Council decisions must only be communicated through formally adopted resolutions.

He also warned university staff against implementing what he described as unlawful instructions issued outside the University’s established procedures.

Then came the bombshell.

In one of the strongest sections of his letter, the Vice Chancellor bluntly told the Council Chairperson that if he could not operate within the legal framework governing public universities, “the most responsible action for you is to resign.”

The explosive letter was copied to the Chancellor, the Minister of Education and Sports, the Attorney General, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, members of the University Council, the University Senate, the Academic Registrar and the University’s Legal Department, signalling just how far the dispute has escalated.

The extraordinary exchange has exposed deep cracks in the University’s leadership, with both camps invoking provisions of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act to justify their actions in an increasingly public power struggle.

Singer Chosen Becky has vowed to pursue the individual behind a fake social media account that allegedly used the photo of a deceased woman to make romantic advances toward her husband, Abdul Ssekajja.

The singer had earlier taken to social media to express frustration over women she claims frequently send intimate messages to her husband despite knowing he is married. To back up her claims, Becky shared screenshots of WhatsApp conversations allegedly sent by a woman identified as Elizabeth, who appeared to be seeking a romantic relationship with Abdul.

According to Becky, such messages have become a regular occurrence, leaving her disappointed by women who knowingly pursue married men.

“My husband gets so many messages like these, actually every day. Naye bakyaala bannange, why are we this cheap? Why would you be so eager to test my husband’s private parts? Eh abakazi muswaza. Kitalo nyo,” she wrote.

She further made it clear that anyone hoping to win over her husband was wasting their time.

“Naye mbakakasa, ono omusajja wange nzekka! Buli alowooza okumufuna awedde kuba najjja mazeeko!”

However, the story took a new twist after Becky said she discovered that the profile picture used by the alleged admirer did not belong to the sender.

According to the singer, investigations revealed that the account had been using the photograph of the late Stella Senyonyi to conceal the real identity of the person behind the messages.

Becky said she only uncovered the truth after publicly sharing the screenshots, prompting people who knew Stella to inform her that the woman in the profile picture had passed away.

Describing the act as insensitive and deceptive, Becky vowed to track down the individual operating the fake account, while extending her respect to the late Stella Senyonyi and her family.

The incident has since sparked debate on social media, with many condemning the misuse of a deceased person’s identity and calling for greater accountability against individuals who create fake online profiles.

KAMPALA: A Canadian national has landed behind bars after allegedly masterminding a multi-billion-shilling fake gold deal that reportedly fleeced Somalia’s Defence Minister of US$1.5 million (about Shs5.6 billion).

Michel Faille, 64, a consultant and resident of Mestil Hotel in Nsambya, Makindye Division, Kampala Uganda was on Friday evening arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he denied charges of obtaining money by false pretences and dealing in minerals without a mineral dealer’s licence.

Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa remanded Faille to Luzira Prison until August 12, 2026, when the case will return to court for mention and an update on ongoing investigations.

Investigators are also hunting for several Ugandan suspects, whose identities have been withheld for now as investigations continue. However, the case has taken another intriguing twist, with some sources claiming the Canadian accused may himself have been duped by his Ugandan collaborators, who are now on the run as we shall reveal in our subsequent publication.

Prosecution alleges that Faille and other suspects still on the run, between July and October 2025 at Acacia Mall in Kamwokya, Kampala, fraudulently obtained US$1.5 million from Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur after falsely claiming they would facilitate the shipment of 16 tonnes of gold to Dubai.

Court also heard that during the same period, Faille was allegedly found with 740 kilograms of nuggets suspected to be gold in Kololo, Kampala, without a valid mineral dealer’s licence.

State Attorney Grace Amy told court that investigations are still ongoing and requested more time for police to complete inquiries before the matter proceeds.

The case is the latest in a string of high-profile gold fraud scandals that have left foreign investors counting massive losses in Uganda.

One of the biggest previous victims was Canadian national Clifford Max Potter, who reportedly lost about US$1 million between 2016 and 2019 after entering a gold purchase agreement with Ugandan businessman Stephen Bairukanga.

According to investigations by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the money was deposited into accounts controlled by Bairukanga, but the promised gold was never delivered. The case also sparked investigations into whether the financial institutions involved complied with Uganda’s anti-money laundering regulations.

Another Canadian investor, Assi Soubhi, a dealer in rare and precious gemstones, also reportedly lost about US$200,000 in a counterfeit gold transaction in Uganda in 2017.

His cooperation with Ugandan police led to the arrest and prosecution of several suspects, including Stellah Birungi Dindi, David Kironde alias Sam Ssimbwa Daudi, Richard Kamugisha, Nasser Kibirige Kilimana and Yazidi Kabonge Wamala, on charges of obtaining money by false pretences, conspiracy to defraud, impersonation and forgery. However, that case has since stalled.

Uganda Police has repeatedly warned international investors to carry out thorough due diligence before entering gold transactions by verifying the credentials and licences of dealers, saying fraudsters continue to target foreign buyers by masquerading as legitimate gold exporters.

The alleged victim, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, is no ordinary investor. He is Somalia’s serving Minister of Defence, a position he has held since 2021, and is widely known for spearheading his country’s military campaign against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

Before becoming Defence Minister, Nur served as Minister of Justice from September 2020 to 2021. He also worked as Senior Adviser to the Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People between 2018 and 2020, and previously served as Deputy Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) before briefly acting as its Director.

His diplomatic career includes serving as Chargé d’Affaires, First Counsellor, First Secretary and Second Secretary at the Somali Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, while earlier in his career he headed security at Villa Somalia, the country’s Presidential Palace.

Nur also played a key role in signing the Defence and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Somalia and Turkey on February 8, 2024, alongside Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, strengthening military and economic cooperation between the two countries.

A graduate of Ankara University with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations, Nur speaks Somali, English and Turkish, and is married with three children.
