Azawi has publicly permitted fans to play her music freely, adding a new twist to the ongoing national conversation about the recently enacted Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The law, which was signed into effect by President Museveni, introduces major reforms in Uganda’s creative industry, including stronger protections for artists and new systems aimed at improving royalty tracking.
Among the new measures is the introduction of a device known as “Nyange,” which is designed to monitor music played in commercial spaces and accurately track airplay for royalty distribution.
However, the reforms have sparked mixed reactions across the entertainment industry, with some artists and fans debating how the changes will affect access to music and earnings.
In response to the ongoing discussions, Azawi took to her platforms and declared that fans are free to play her music without worrying about copyright restrictions.
