Buganda explores film partnership to take Uganda Martyrs story global – Sqoop

In a move that could reshape how Uganda’s heritage is presented to the world, the Buganda Kingdom is exploring a partnership with filmmaker Mathew Nabwiso on Flames of Faith, an upcoming historical epic centred on Kabaka Mwanga and the Uganda Martyrs.

The potential collaboration follows a strategic push by Rosa Malango, the Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism and Trade, to strengthen community-based tourism by linking Uganda’s creative industry with its cultural institutions.

Malango led a high-level delegation comprising members of the Producers Guild of Uganda and representatives from the iKON Film and Television Awards for talks at Bulange, Mengo. The team met the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, alongside Anthony Wamala and Robert Sserwanga.

At the centre of the discussions is a broader vision: turning Uganda’s historical narratives into global cinema capable of attracting international audiences—and, ultimately, tourists—to the very communities where that history unfolded.

Speaking after the meeting, Mayiga welcomed the initiative, highlighting film’s power to communicate culture beyond borders.

“It is often difficult for people to understand places they have not experienced,” he said in a post on X. “Film offers a powerful platform to showcase Uganda’s true identity, values, and opportunities to the world.”

Flames of Faith is expected to draw heavily on Uganda’s cultural and religious history, with Nabwiso—known for projects like Sabotage, Rain, and Prickly Roses—bringing his storytelling experience to the production.

The engagement at Mengo signals a growing strategy to use cross-sector collaboration to position Uganda’s heritage not just as history, but as a driver of tourism and economic growth.

If realised, the partnership could mark a significant step in using film to transform local stories into global cultural assets.
